Every character who wears one exclaims that it’s an oh so bold and embarrassing design. To me they seem like ordinary superhero costumes. It’s not even like the armored underwear costumes that some characters wear. Anyone with more info on this?

I’d assume it’s lampshading (CAUTION: tv tropes link). The writers and artists know that it would be weird irl to wear those uniforms but they (or someone) decided they’d make for flashy covers so the uniforms stay and the characters get to be a bit snarky about them.
Edit: added tv tropes rabbit hole warning, I’m so sorry if anyone already fell into one, there is no excuse for my behaviour.
I don’t think so, this isn’t a general “aren’t superhero costumes whack” thing. Jean and Banshee have other costumes that’d be just as out of place irl but they only complain about these ones
I’m not saying it’s a general thing, they’re talking specifically about the yellow-and-blue/black spandex that has been target of more or less friendly ridicule forever. You also can’t expect them to snark about everything that might seem weird, it’s not a parody.
I think it’s the high waist cut for the yellow area. Plus the thong in the back. In fact, the yellow area looks a bit more like Borat’s swimsuit with a belt. The high waist was starting to be a trend irl in the US back in the early 90s for women but was still seen as risque back then because of how much hip was shown. You would never see that look on a man. Thongs were rarely seen in public for either.
Traditional superhero outfits had more of a “briefs” look which were just seen as more normalized. No high waist cut, and definitely no thong. Yes there’s blue spandex underneath of these so no actual skin is shown. That might be the only way they could have gotten away with it from a publishing standard. But that particular cut was just more suggestive than previous ones based on societal standards of the day.
This seems to be the best explanation
They’re really bright. Really really bright.
If this is an innuendo it’s flying over my head
It’s not, they’re just really ridiculous. Corny by today’s standards
Bro needs more X-factor in his life.
I think they were mostly Jim Lee trying to update the old school 60s uniforms for the 90s. I kind of like how they look.
They debuted before Jim Lee, during Marc Silvestiri’s run. I also like how they look
