GNOME 50 released
KDE Plasma 6.6 released

Its good to have good options.
I was under the impression that the desktop environment (especially GNOME vs KDE) performs about the same in gaming or graphics in general. Some of the results are pretty shocking to me how much they can differ.

A way bigger difference than I expected. I kinda wish they added Gamescope/Gaming Mode as another comparison point.
This is why I switched. I absolutely drool over Gnome UX/UI I find it clean and easier to use & navigate. But Plasma has always been faster to improve gaming related stuff. I guess Valve’s sponsorship is a great motivation.
The moment I switched was when Plasma got VRR, then it got HDR, I’m not leaving, even if I dislike it aesthetically.
I just wish those figma mockups that leaked a while ago would come true.
to be fair the beauty of Plasma is you can quite literally make it look like anything you want. Want to make it look like windows 98? it’s easily doable. CDE? yup if you want. something like windowmaker? sure thing.
I would suspect with a bit of work and the use of widgets it wouldn’t surprise me if you could make Plasma mimic GNOME.
I rearranged plasma to look like gnome. There is also a gnome-like overview (default keybind super+w). Changed to gnome’s font (Inter, used to be cantarell). It’s pretty neat.
How do I get the gnome overview ?
Just press super+w (super is the “windows” key)
Yeah, no. It’s different. I’ll go get a video a get back to you.
Ooh, I had no idea such a thing might have an effect this pronounced. Definitely considering making the switch myself, between this and their recent VR mode work, gotta look into rebasing my bazzite image.
Ublue advices against rebasing between different DEs.
Ah, they do indeed have a warning at the top about that. Thanks for the heads up!
Kinda unfortunate, I guess I’m stuck here then, because there’s no way I’m starting from scratch with all my modded games, emulators, etc.
That’s misleading, there was a significant outlier. Gnome was on average slower, but not that much slower.
There was outlier in GNOME outperforming KDE by a large amount too.
Edit: Okay, maybe not that large. I agree with you, that the outlier they had (included twice even) has a huge impact. But it is some real game and with real settings and configuration. So making an exempt just because you don’t like the results would be faking the result. They just should have included a result without the outlier, just for comparison.
