7 minutes and 23 seconds faster than the previous record.
I’m back, well, at least for another speedrun of plutonia, and maybe more who knows. I figured I’d do another speedrun that wouldn’t take too much effort, so I had a look at my doom2 nightmare run, but with lots of save/load I was only like 30 seconds ahead at the end and I quickly abandoned that idea. So I thought “Well, what about plutonia?” and I knew I used a lot of safe strategies the previous time I did this, but I guess it was just too safe. Since I last did this category I did a 100% secrets run so I probably had some ideas that I could carry over. Haven’t played plutonia in 2-3 years, but it hardly took any time at all to improve the route and get enough practice.
Despite the big time improvement this run lost a lot on some pretty bad mistakes and a bit of bad luck, but I haven’t done anything in a while so it’ll have to do.

- Map 01: I’d usually reset if I fail the jump to the exit, but I only do 1-2 attempts each week so I figured I’d make it count.
- Map 03: Leave the arch-vile alive so there’s no risk of it respawning by the time I get back, skip the soulsphere secret to save time.
- Map 04: This map is surprsingly easy with the exit switch trick, I clear out some cacodemons first, can be skipped, but saving 5-10 seconds wasn’t worth the extra risk.
- Map 06: First I failed to close the red key door, then I was met with a lost soul after opening the next door which has never happened before, then I followed up by firing at the lost soul and I knew that was the wrong time to do so because it wakes up all the pinkies, lucky to survive.
- Map 08: SSG to try and time the elevators, doesn’t always work.
- Map 09: I failed the linedef skip at the end, I was supposed to run around it and it would have avoided the mancubi which caused my screen to go red.
- Map 10: Open the door through the wall instead of getting blue key, it costs like 8 seconds and isn’t really necessary (though because of the disaster that was map 09 it absolutely was), but I figured it would be cool to include and makes map 12 a lot easier. Then a lindef skip on the revenant closet which is pretty easy.
- Map 11: Should have just taken the hit from the vile or tried to hide along the wall maybe, instead I had to go around the start and waste lots of time.
- Map 12: Embarrassing, failed the jump twice, was too distracted by those cacodemons and wanted to rush things since the run was already bad, but then it just got worse. I was extremely lucky with respawn RNG here.
- Map 13: Billa found a new setup for the glide in the north direction here making it a lot faster/easier to do.
- Map 15: That revenant was perfectly placed on the yellow key, never seen anything like it before.
- Map 16: Used to do a double linedef skip here, but it’s not necessary.
- Map 17: Really bad movement missing the entrance, death exit to finish, could maybe have gotten shot after the first rocket but I didn’t care.
- Map 18: I skip the megasphere/BFG secret, you don’t need too much health for the arch-vile jump.
- Map 20: A new switch trick, too slow for something like uv-speed, but really good for nightmare.
- Map 21: Used to do this level much slower in my other nightmare runs, it was a bit safer that way, especially since you can get the megasphere, but it’s not a big risk to just go directly for the glide. Lost half my health and armor though which makes map 22 very dangerous.
- Map 22: Skip linedef by the teleporter so that it’s easier to get red key, but it does also skip the soulsphere.
- Map 23: Anything can happen here.
- Map 24: Unlucky with the vile, usually quite easy to get the jump. Linedef skip to avoid having to deal with the cyberdemon, the cyberdemon has to be infighting otherwise or you need to kill him which takes forever.
- Map 30: No idea how I got hit by the cyberdemon, didn’t really matter.
Hella impressive, watching the whole thing!
