I was born in '79. Have the right to an abortion from day 1. Witnessed the AIDS epidemic and gay people I know die as a young child and see the media demonize them. Came out as an 11 year old in 6th grade. Constant bullying. In highschool, Best friend, also gay, is beaten so severely for being gay he is put in the hospital. Things start to seem better by the time I reach college. I start to feel like I am safe to be openly gay. During postdoctoral fellowship, gay marriage in my state becomes legal. Become more aware of trans and non-binary folk. Watch other gay people hate on the trans, and cannot fathom how a class of people so vilified could perpetuate the same shit onto trans people. Watch Trump get elected, watch him pack the courts. Watch the Trump courts take away abortion. Watch Trump round up brown people and lock them up in secret camps without due process or verifying their citizenship. Watch an LGBT woman get murdered by ICE in broad daylight in Minnesota with 0 repercussions. Realize that once they are done with brown people, they are coming for my group next.
I’m fucking terrified. I have nightmares and panic attacks. I don’t have the resources to leave the USA either.
If it helps, the administration is so incompetent that I don’t think they’ll ever move off of brown people. You may be safe because they can’t get their shit together. I wouldn’t rely on that though.
I’m scared enough that I have a to-go bag with some cash, outdoor survival gear, and I am learning how to craft snares and fishing traps. I have guides to edible plants in my area and have been learning how to smoke meat. If the American gestapo comes looking for me, I plan to attempt to hide in the wilderness. If I die, I’d rather let the wilderness take me than be murdered by republicans.
