Federal government plan outlines cuts of roughly 40% to California, Arizona and Nevada but fix is likely to be only temporary
The US government released its anxiously awaited plan for how to manage the Colorado River crisis on Friday, which includes the potential for harsh cuts in water supplied to California, Arizona and Nevada.
Under the proposal, the so-called lower basin states stand to lose up to 3m acre-feet (3.7bn kiloliters) a year – enough water annually to serve more than 25 million people and roughly 40% of their collective total. The so-called upper basin states – Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming – were spared from mandates restricting their supply.
The Colorado River supplies roughly 40 million people in seven states, two countries and dozens of tribes, and also irrigates 5.5m acres (2.2 hectares) of farmland. The federal government has limited jurisdiction over state-based water policy but is responsible for managing the dams at Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the two key reservoirs that lower basin supplies flow through.
If the way we approach agriculture and landscaping isnt shaken up soon this is going to get a lot worse before it gets better
Water (and especially potable water) is soon going to be one of our most precious resources and we still have people in charge who dont even consider it a human right let alone absolutely necessary for our survival.
We waste so much water for businesses it’s insane. Billions of gallons of water are sent to San Diego to create that city when in reality it’s a desert. No one should even be living there. Don’t even get me started on data centers
Oh the crisis where we allocated too much water for the refill rate decades ago and already knew?
The crisis we were already facing when we then increased water shares to companies?
The crisis that was already critical before data centers were also allocated water?
The crisis the people stood against leaving to worsen multiple times through the years?
Yeah. That one.
The one absolutely no one could predict. Its crazy how it just came out of no where.

Also seems rich considering the release from the CA water reservoirs last year. https://www.sfgate.com/centralcalifornia/article/trump-california-reservoir-dump-kaweah-success-20209496.php
Maybe they’ll stop growing alfalfa in the desert?
Yeah you want to know who mostly buys the alfalfa we grow in the desert? The Middle East, to feed their livestock.
Want to know why they buy it instead of growing it in the desert? Because it’s widely illegal to farm alfalfa in the Middle East.
Makes a guy think.
Isn’t Utah the primary grower of alfalfa? They were spared from the cuts
Me living in one of these states wondering if I somehow had the resources to move (I don’t), if I should really really hustle along to get move-ready faster (I can’t).
:(
Step 1: close dara centers.
who the h*ck is dara
Two versions down from data
Data centers and stop fucking farming in this region
The climate crisis is also taking an increasingly large share. Snowmelt that feeds the river is evaporating more quickly, and thirsty soils and plants soak up more water. Flows in the Colorado are down 20% over the last century and precipitation has shrunk by about 7%.
This crisis is being caused by people who are too stubborn to accept the reality. This is unsustainable. Water was a relatively limited recourse before climate change, it’s only gotten more limited as climate change has advanced and you can’t use water that doesn’t exist. If some people refuse to accept that fact, I’m afraid they’re just going to have to be forced to accept it.
When reality is gonna hit these people in the face they’ll complain that nobody told them it was that bad. When people did tell them it was getting that bad.
Oh you think food is expensive now? Just wait until California runs out of water for its agriculture.
I don’t think they’ll accept it even once it becomes an unavoidable fact. The human mind’s capacity for denial is remarkable.
There is no crisis. The Americans put it down like dog. It has Tibet written on it. We all know as it goes grav ti me. No where near the dam do you see this ut is fabricated. North is not. Yes mainly it is. Lake Powell will rebuild stronger that before. Nasi go great woth geaps.
Um…what?
Dog. Get with the program. Their lying ti yo. I know this because Tyler knows this. The bombs are gunna go off. Sealed wojak temp mines of Christ. Holy hand grenades of the resistance. Rock on number 48 n 50. We support you all fogging day.
