Apparaten verplicht repareerbaar door nieuwe EU-wet

Iedere wasmachine, telefoon of televisie die je vanaf morgen in Europa koopt, moet beter repareerbaar zijn. Dan treedt namelijk de Europese Right to Repair Act in werking. Wat dat in de praktijk betekent, bespreken we met Ruth Mugge, hoogleraar Ontwerpen voor duurzaam consumentengedrag aan de TU Delft, en Oscar Visser, CFO van Fairphone.

The products covered by the obligation to repair currently include:

  • washing machines and washer-dryers
  • dishwashers
  • refrigerators
  • electronic displays
  • welding equipment
  • servers and data storage products
  • mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets
  • tumble dryers
  • e-bikes and e-scooters batteries (from 18 February 2027)

    So drums in washing machines have to stop being sealed where you can’t even access the bearings?

    Doubt it.

    It’s probably only about availability of parts which isn’t the real problem: prices will still be a nightmare and parts will still be highly specific so third parties don’t bother making any.

      Even parts is kind of a problem though. I had an expensive appliance break and the service guys told me that the part I needed wasn’t available anymore.

      So forcing companies to keep spare parts a number of years after the product goes out of service should be law. Cheap things 1-3 years, expensive things 15-20 years. Or force them to open source the full specs so that 3rd parties can make the part.
