IIRC Reed, or an un-named scientist who looked exactly like Reed, first appeared in one of Marvel’s monster comics. Might have just been Kirby design aesthetic at work.

If I recall correctly, it took the creators about three issues to realize that just being invisible wasn’t much of a melee power, and they upgraded her to having an invisible force field.
