Great piece by Vijay Prashad that talks a little bit about BRICS’ history and then about its current state.
Anti-imperialists come to hear a lot about BRICS since it is mentioned often in our circles but news articles are often understandably narrower in scope. This essay on the other hand paints a slightly bigger picture.
I don’t see it as just a balancing of forces-- I genuinely think, if shrewdly handled by the burgeoning cropping of anti-western governments in western Afrika, could prove to be the fulcrum that leads to the tipping of the scale that changes the world. More Eritreas, more Malis, more Burkina Fasos, more Nigers. I think this is the start of something glorious-- but “not by themselves changing the world” is a rational expectation-temperer.
Vijay is right although countering the imperialist US is more important at this stage but Vijay’s article is directed towards western audiences
