nsfw
but for data brokers: if it exists, there is a way to farm data with it.

21·2 days agoSiloing, or defense in depth, is always a good idea! In my country, there is no way to have a phone number or a SIM card without tying it to one’s government issued personal identification number, so personally, I’d use my compromised phone to tether Internet to the private phone. Using the gorgeous VPN Hotspot app, I can even tether a VPN connection without leakage. This of course doesn’t counter location tracking through cell tower triangulation, but then again, this post wasn’t specifically about that, so. 😄

C Programming Language@programming.dev•Why does the compiler understand ASCII by default?English
1·2 days agoSweet! I think this is the answer that I was looking for, although my post is poorly phrased. 😅
Does this mean that in theory, there could arise problems with portability? 98-ish percent of all systems use Unicode, but if I were to run my program on an obscure system whose underlying character encoding is not Unicode or some superset of ASCII, I assume it would return other values?

0·2 days agoLOL (please excuse my early 2000’s slang)
Thanks for that clarification.
What I still don’t quite understand is, does this mean that there is no “checking against an ASCII table” or “lookup” going on? But how then does it know that 0x18 is CAN (disregard)?

I understand your point, but this is not a good comparison. How often do people of any gender get targeted by that? How often do women fall victim to domestic violence because they chose not to judge by capacity and potential but instead they wanted to believe that this time it might be different?

23·2 days agoI share your anger and frustration, but, as much as I hate revisionism, try lobbying instead of getting yourself locked up. I managed to convince my freaking COUNTY to add a phrase about banning smart glasses on hospital grounds “simply” by explaining the situation to them. 71·2 days agoThe problem is not proving in court how unethical these are. There is plenty of proof and knowledge of that, even among authorities.
The problem is, people don’t care and the manufacturers know exactly how to play these people.
What would actually not hold up in court is the matter of proportionality. There isn’t a single juror or judge that would buy OP’s interpretation that invasion of privacy merits destruction of property.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why are some people perpetually stuck in the 2000s?English
3·2 days agoIt’s only fair to be specific: in the earlier games, you had to be strategic. If you taught a TM, you used it up. If you taught an HM, it couldn’t be unlearned. And while the backend of the leveling and stats system was broken, at least there weren’t any obvious methods to “cheat” that weren’t straight out bugs. I remember the first time I played Omega Ruby and I started to discover all this. And when I realized there was an island on which I could simply hold the joystick in one place to endlessly walk/bicycle and hatch eggs, I just quit Pokémon and never looked back. Occasionally, I do pick up my Fire Red and Soul Silver, the two last great games, if you ask me, but that’s all.

7·2 days ago“use a strong password” whats that gonna do if the database gets pwned, sandra?
What database? And how is it pwned? And less importantly, who the hell is Sandra 😂
If you have chosen a, for lack of a better term, password database provider that stores passwords in plain text, which by the way is the only scenario in which pwning such a database would be viable, then that’s on you. Otherwise, trying pwn a database that stores passwords in hashed formats following a secure hashing algorithm is not viable unless you are a nation state level actor with an unlimited amount of 5090s. Even then, if such an actor targets you, you are not like to have subscribes to an online database anyway.
The same applies for the scenario where you store your passwords locally: are they in plain text? Then thank the attacker for teaching you a lesson.* If they are hashed - or even better, since they are saved on your system, encrypted - then good luck brute forcing them.
*I do not condone this behavior
Edit: I miss the 2000’s because connecting with people face to face was a thing. Because of my mental illness, I’m not capable of dating online. Our cultural (d)evolution has taken that from me. Also, Pokémon was still good instead of brain dead children’s slop.

It was a recurring subject during my therapy sessions: I avoid looking at my reflection, be it in a mirror, a puddle, a window, my smartphone. I’m still unsure whether it’s because of gender dysphoria, “simple” low self-esteem, self hatred or whatever, but it just makes me uncomfortable. I wish I could look at myself and feel: “I love this person”.
