The good news is that instead of research that might lead to something that is meaningfully super intelligent, or even intelligent in any moral agent sort of way, instead we’ve put all the AI funding into LLMs and transformer architectures. There’s likely little to no research with any odds of actually progressing in that direction because of LLMs instead sucking up all the oxygen. There’s nothing to worry about in the near future, and anyone telling you otherwise has something to sell you, or really doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

If something happens that causes us to actually need to grapple with the idea of a sentient machine in the next 50-70 years, society will have gone on a very different course than it seems to be, and we’ll all be very old if we’re still around.

Some MS office products are wedged deeply into companies’ workflow, and that software lock-in supports Windows software lock-in. Maybe it doesn’t fix the deeper problem, but a compatibility tool developer won’t fix that anyway. That comes from people updating business processes per company.

You should always be a bit skeptical, sometimes really arcane subjects’ articles are written by one of the handful of people who understand them, sometimes they’re very subtly wrong but not prominent enough to get the right attention. If something seems off, Wikipedia has tools like the Talk page, and looking at Edit history, that can allow you to glean information in-platform about what might be happening. Edit wars, vandalism, disagreements among editors, maybe a negotiated agreement about a way to represent something controversial, all can become clearer by looking at those resources. You can also check its sources, to see if they agree with what felt off to you, or if there isn’t a good source on that claim.

It’s not perfect, any system can fail, but at least it has reasonable tools to figure out why it says what it says, and dig further.

The contention isn’t that they’re selling things to civilians, but that they’re selling things to members of the Russian armed forces, which they’re then using as supplies in combat. Don’t let LLMs take your em dashes; flattening your language to the lowest common denominator to avoid doing anything too distinctive less you be accused of non-authorship… that’s a real harm to you and your reader. If you know how to use them, and enjoy using them, use them fearlessly.

The false positive rate is pretty low, but a false negative of 35% is pretty concerning in terms of whether they’re fit for purpose. Like it’ll rarely misclassify human writing as AI generated, but it’s somewhat closer to a coin flip in correctly identifying AI generated language. It’s a signal, but I imagine it’s a poor substitute for the judgement of a person who has spent time teaching teenagers / young adults to write.

The writing is… worse than I’d thought when I played it as a 13 year old, but the gameplay is from the early era of good 3D Sonic, and the stage layout making a playthrough short means the weaker parts of the design don’t need to overstay their welcome too much. If the threat is “we’re about to have a fight you won’t survive”, your critique is valid. If the threat is “you’ve just been poisoned, and will succumb within a few days”, then giving them the time to put their papers in order really won’t harm the speaker at all. Though maybe it isn’t entirely effective as a threat. If the threat is “I can take actions that will end your life, but all I’m telling you is it’s happening soon” it works as an ominous threat, and a sincere offer (though they’d probably better hurry).

Honestly if we brought back the ransom note aesthetic, people might find it a breath of fresh air compared to the low effort chat gpt posters they see today.
