Throw GrapheneOS on it and its crazy good
I don’t know about this but last night I had to help my mom reset her Google Pixel 7 because it was getting extremely hot like an app was just draining the battery like mad and the Google assistant kept popping up and the camera kept popping up like you were pressing the power button and it was just an entire mess. I know for a fact that she was not on the beta of any software, and yet that was still occurring.
I want to say I had the AB partitioning unlike the Google Pixel 1 or Nexus 6P or something like that. It’s been a long time ago and I don’t even want to think of not having them anymore. The fact that they waited this long to adopt it just seems kind of dumb.
With things like GrapheneOS its literally never been easier. Plug your phone into the computer, go to their website, and press a couple of buttons and read a couple of instructions. And you now have an alternative operating system on your phone.
Edit: hell, simplifiedprivacy.com will literally do it for you and send you the device.
Wait, really? They have not had that feature until now? That’s fucking ridiculous. Considering I’ve had it on my $200 one plus for three years and my $200 Motorola’s for years before that.
There is quite a large delta between 512 KVPS 3G and even rather slow 4G at say like 10 MBPS which allows you to stream 1080p video etc. Yes 10 MBPS is not super fast for downloading but it will get your tasks done within a decent time.
I very seriously doubt it would become entirely impossible because if it became entirely impossible on any big brand name to do so then somebody would launch a brand that specifically allowed for that. Fairphone is somewhat that way already.
Well, I have to disagree with being able to swap the OS on your phone as I have definitely been doing that for a very long time with the custom ROM scene. And in fact, I am on lineage OS right now with no Google Play Services so you can stop a lot of that crap.
Apparently they use one of the faster IoT chips that’s supported for like 10 years.
I didn’t really have any reason to listen to them because I already do not buy a new phone every year and keep them for as long as I can.
This exactly, as long as your phone has at least one frequency band of the provider, then it will at least connect to their network and allow you to access data. Calling seems to be a whole different thing, though, because it requires something with IMS.
Well, 2G and 3G are being shut off in the United States as well. I believe AT&T shut down their 2G network in 2017 and shut down their 3G network here recently. And T-Mobile in the United States shut down their 3G network in 2022. And while their 2G network is still currently running, it won’t be forever. I believe Verizon is also in the process of shutting down or has already shut down 2G and 3G as well.
I actually may have this problem eventually in the United States as well, because I’m running a OnePlus Nord N200 with lineage OS, and it does not seem to be capable of voice over LTE while running lineage OS, but will work fine with voice over LTE using the stock ROM, which I refuse to use. Right now I either have to be within range of Wi-Fi or if I place a call my phone falls back to the 2G network in order to place the call and then flips back to 5G when the call ends.
Edit: on T-Mobile. I do not believe it will work on AT&T at all, and I have not tested with Verizon, so I’m not sure.
Edit 2: I think voice over LTE could be made to work properly because I’ve seen other lineage OS devices that work fine with it. So it must be something with this specific ROM.
By the way, I am not sure if it is a standard function of lineage OS, a standard function of Android 13 and above, or something with lineage OS on my specific OnePlus device. But I am able to limit my charge to 80% and it will never charge above that unless I turn it off. I bought the phone brand new and have been using that function since day one and it works extremely well.
Yep, I run one in my Firefox, and I just leave it open 24-7.
I just haven’t really seen it brought up as a point of discussion.
That is kind of my thought. Phone technology doesn’t change drastically within two years and a car does not change drastically within two years.
Good points
Edit: Though there was the point in the early to mid-2010s where hardware was improving so rapidly that it would have been infeasible to not replace it as soon as possible.
Stop hiding and you can be
My guess is that somebody has already forked it if it’s a dependency and so somebody else will just republish it.
