Oh, so true. I’ve been struggling with burnout for months now, no relief in sight.
The person below me is going to call an old friend this weekend.
I remember when I was 17, I went to a Haunted Hay Ride with the girl I was dating at the time. Halfway through the ride, they stopped it and a bunch of witches came out to give everyone cider and donuts. The witch that served me was wearing full gross-old-witch makeup and jokingly flirting with me, so I started flirting back.
Just as the ride started up again, I said, “So hey, what’s your number?”
And she yelled, “SEVEN!” and ran cackling into the woods.
It remains one of the funniest things I’ve ever experienced firsthand.

I was completely on the hype train for this film. I loved Alive in Joburg and thought this was going to be a cool expansion on the premise with more time and a bigger budget.
And it kind of was at first. But the longer it ran, the more it turned into another white savior action movie.
I saw it in theaters opening night with an old girlfriend, and we both came out at the end shrugging at each other and going, “That was okay… ish. I guess.”
Can confirm. I’m alive, except on the inside.
I’m sitting here, crossing my fingers that my father dies quick and soon. If he lives too long, he’ll need to sell his house to fund his elder care, and then I’ll never own a home.
Typically, you’re allowed to bring it out to the curb after a certain hour the night before collection day and you need to get it back out of view by a certain hour after the garbagemen come through.

I mean… yeah and so? Public schools exist specifically to create a baseline of knowledge and experience in the population. It’s part of a social contract that says, “by the time they reach adulthood, a person should be able to read, write, do math, and not want to burn everything down or kill people.”
Those values are shared by most of the world. It’s not surprising that schools reinforce those things, because that’s very specifically what they were created for. The alternative would be what? Not have schools?

Anecdotally, my mother, father, and half my grandparents grew up solidly middle class in single-earner homes.

Just last night I introduced my partner to the music of Woody’s son, Arlo Guthrie. They had never heard Arlo’s famous anti-draft/anti-police song “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree.” I was shocked; I grew up with WAMC playing the song every Thanksgiving.

What it’s actually highlighted is how overworked and underpaid everyone is now. When a single salary could comfortably support a whole family, people had more time. When only one person needed to leave the house to earn money, the rest of the family had time during the day to help with the domestic work: dishes, laundry, gardening, etc. Then the evenings could be spent indulging hobbies.
Now that we live in a world where you need to have a dual income to barely get by, both partners are working 8-10 hours per day for the paycheck and then coming home to another 2-3 hours of domestic work. It’s fucking exhausting and there isn’t time to focus on quilting, whittling, playing music, or any of the other fun and creative hobbies that my grandparents got to be into.
So these AIdiot tech bros come along and offer to sell you the feeling of doing those hobbies without having to spend the time or energy to actually do them? It’s shitty, but I understand why a lot of people are taking that deal.
I’ve heard you can get good money for a kidney.

I hadn’t drank Gatorade in probably two decades, and last week I saw a sale, shrugged, and said, “Sure, I’ll try that again.” Shit timing on my part, I guess.
My father-in-law fell down a flight of stairs last week. He just laid on the floor for three hours while he and his wife argued over if they could afford the ambulance. If I hadn’t found out and gone over to get him myself, I think he’d probably still be on the floor now.
Dude let his wife for another woman. People don’t do that out of the blue. If he had gotten a divorce and then met the new girlfriend, that would be a very different story. But this? As presented? This guy decided to pursue a relationship with a woman despite his commitments to his wife.
He’s not a good guy just because he didn’t do anything physical with her first; at best, he’s slightly not-as-bad. But I think most people would be just as bothered by their partner daydreaming about running away with another person as they would be with their partner being physically intimate with another person.

I felt like a celebrity when my old IRC handle popped up on bash.org for one line. I didn’t even say anything funny, just the “what?” that set up someone else’s joke, but it was cool to see me there.
The internet was so much better when it was just, like, ten people.

This post is about Chuck’s role as Senate leader specifically, not as a senator. When the new congress is in season next year, he intends to continue to be the chief spokesperson of the Democratic party.
Not useless per se, but the position is elected by the other senators within the party, not by the people. So if you don’t want him representing the Democratic party to the White House and the Senate, you should start calling your representatives and complaining now.

failed the part of history where minorities get sacrificed before meaningful resistance emerges
Oh, so I need to die for you to have a better world. I’m the martyr you need to inspire you to protect others. Got it. Super cool and not at all fucked up.

The Electoral College would be tolerable if the size of the House wasn’t arbitrarily limited. If Wyoming’s population of ~580k is one district, then California at ~39.5m should have 69 districts instead of 52. Overall, the EC should have something like 150 additional votes to distribute.

Literally, their pitches have amounted to, “We’re going to create massive unemployment” and “we’re going to kill everyone.” And they’re absolutely shocked that the public opinion is against them?
So exactly what happened with this movie and Blomkamp’s disappointing follow-ups of Elysium and Chappie?
