Anybody know what Merc are doing differently that is resulting in consistently slower stops? Has to be something fundamental with their approach.

They like to play things safe. This served them well when they could rely on having the fastest car, but it’s starting to hurt them now I feel.

When it comes to pitstops, there are two philosophies:

      A. Do them as quick as possible. For that to work, you need your parts to be manifactured a certain way so everything can be done fast.

      B. Do them as safe as possible. Thats what Merc are going for, and they have optimzed their processes and parts/Tools to do perfect pitstops that are not as quick.

The thing is, even Ferrari haven’t fucked up hardly ever with their faster stops this season, its no longer that faster means mistakes are a regular occurrence.

We saw in 21 that the FIA introduced rule changes around pit stops to make them slower, and for a time this reduced the delta Merc had to the other teams but its grown again, partly as Merc seem to have gotten slower.
