      It’s classic passive agressive. Pay a compliment, then sneak in a “despite what people say” as a reminder that people talk smack about you behind your back to conjure fear and self-doubt. What are people saying about me?

      It is a positive and wholesome comment.

      Although in England the cultural interpretation of many comments is to mean for the most negative interpretation. The complexity of language and culture intersect in strange ways.

      “Be true to yourself despite external pressure” is a message I can definitely get behind.
