Have you ever heard the phrase “God tests us”? It is often said by Muslims, but I have heard it from Christians as well. Usually, when you ask the question “Why do we suffer?” these people answer, “God is testing you! God is putting you to the test!”
What do you think about this? Personally, this doctrine seems monstrous to me. It undermines faith in God’s Omnibenevolence and His kindness. And how does this resonate with you?
When I have heard it used it is usually in response to logic questions, and Christians flip it to a faith qurstion.
Eg. If God is omnipotent why would he let Israel murder Palestinian children with sniper rifles…God tests us.
Meaning their faith is tested to see if they would still follow God even when he puts them in terrible situation. Like when God ordered Abraham? to kill his son.
If there is not a ‘reason’ for a sucky thing in your life, it would mean your concept of an omnipotent God is wrong.
Most people would rather literally die than re-evaluate a concept so fundamental to the identity and sense of self they have constructed.
And I don’t completely blame them. Allowing oneself to sit with the idea there is no grand plan to any of this can be extremely distressing.
