        @Lats @silence7

        We can leave it in the ground and it would be crazy to want to “max out oil and gas”

        “crazy” as in an obvious sign that some politicians don’t understand what the hell they’re talking about.

        Or to be more polite, they’re not listening to the scientific advice because they don’t understand the science. George Monbiot thinks some leaders are sociopaths.

        However, the fact that #COP28 agreed that fossil fuels need to be phased out, is a big win for humanity (considering)

          @scientist @silence7 I think we got better out of #COP28 then I expected.

          When talking about politicians, we seem to have a few views: worried about jobs, worried about donors (#fossilfuel companies) and ideological convictions. We have had the absurd situation of a methane gas extraction company threatening the Australian Government with cancellation of $6b of projects unless they got appropriate legislation. The government caved as was worried about jobs, the opposition and a voter backlash. They kept it secret until the legislation passed.

          Our previous PM was widely thought to be a sociopath, it’s the sort of job that attracts them.

            Government with cancellation of $6b of projects unless they got appropriate legislation.

            I’m a yank, so I might be talking out of the wrong hole here. That sounds like an empty threat. If those projects are in their interest, they will do them. Assume corporations will act in their own interest, unless they are organized like Facebook and their management is immune. Otherwise, less principled institutional and large share holders will replace them.
