Abolish farming? What? How are we supposed to get food? Do they mean animal farms? We can live without meat, but not without vegetables.
They aren’t, its a sensationalist reactionary headline. The summit says this
Last month (in April 2023), the Global Methane Hub collaborated with the Ministries of Agriculture of Chile and Spain to convene the first-ever global ministerial on agricultural practices to reduce methane emissions. The ministerial brought together high-ranking government members to share global perspectives on methane reduction and low-emission food systems. The gathering led to a statement in which the nations committed to support efforts to improve the quality and quantity of, and access to, finance for climate change adaptation and mitigation measures in the agriculture and food sectors and to collaborate on efforts aimed at lowering methane emissions in agriculture and food systems
So they are hoping to reduce methane in farming, which could include no longer raising animals that have high methane outputs, or finding a better way to raise them with reduced methane.
They are using climate change as an excuse here. The EU directives will result in ruining small-scale private farms in favour of corporate farming. They are trying to impose regulations that are too expensive for small farmers to implement and promote corporations buying up farmland with subsidies.
Yes, agriculture is not the main driver of climate change , it is the petrochemical transport systems and oh yes the wars waged by US and the military of US.
Unfortunately no, animal agriculture (& really therefore all agriculture, since most food grown on earth currently goes to feeding livestock) actually is the main culprit for greenhouse gas emissions. The oil & transport cartels are the reason theres too many cars, and the parking lots heat up entire cities by 20+ degrees. It’s a big part of it. Planes, and water shipping have impacts too. But yea, in a literal way agriculture is indeed the main driver of climate change.
