I am trying to get my own custom domain. However for my name with all the major tlds such as .com .net .io and such, @firstnamelastname.tld and @lastname.tld are taken. I don’t want to have a less trusted tld such as .xyz and would rather stick with the popular ones. Only my first name without the .com tld is not taken, so @firstname.io or @firstname.net for example.
I was thinking I could potentially do lastname-mail@firstname.io/net or something of that sort and I think it looks pretty decent. What are your thoughts?
Nobody cares so long as it’s not something like “edgelord69@pussydestroyer.io”
Dude. Not cool doxxing my email like that
An older relative had me help him with his resume recently. He gave me his email as something like jugman1953@domain.net and I asked if that was what he wanted to use. He apparently collects antique crockery… I told him that may come off as something else. He insisted, so I used it.
I guess it shows what I know, because he got the job. Even a questionable email isn’t always a deal breaker.
come on, what’s wrong with an email like ben.dover@buggerme.tld?
Is this a Slack Wyrm reference I see before me? 😁
I dont see a problem.
Agreed; I think it’d be dope.
It’s fine but a lot of forms and sites won’t work with it. Like legit will say someone@something.email is not a valid address.
So I would suggest a “normal” .com, .net., or ccTLD like .us. Those I haven’t seen that issue for.
Also some gTLDs will get automatic spam scores and stuff. .zip is probably gonna be on a ton of blocklists etc.
This in a nutshell.
I snagged a domain I’m really happy with, but because it’s not a .net or .com, I’d say like 20% of forms do not accept it as a “valid” input, so I have to have a backup.
In Australia, we get access to a cheap .id.au TLD we can use. To register we just have to show proof of identity. I own lastname.id.au and I have my email address myfirstname@lastname.id.au and my wife has herfirstname@lastname.id.au. I don’t have any issues with services or sites not accepting the unusual TLD.
How cheap is cheap? How have I never heard of this?
Well, by cheap I mean non-premium pricing. It costs the same as a .com.au domain, it’s around $20/year for the domain. See here for more info: https://www.auda.org.au/au-domain-names/domain-name-help/idau-rules-eligibility-and-allocation
I have firstnamelastna.me. Can you get a little creative with the TLDs?
To answer your question tho hello@firstname.com would look better than Lastname@firstname.tld
You can also do a catch all and use anything@firstname.com (eg google@firstname.com) but those get a little spam happy.
I have the same firstname@lastna.me setup as well. It’s honestly pretty nice.
I have first name with last initial.tld
We’re slowly getting to the point where the tld doesnt matter as much.
I’ll one up every one :)
I have firstname @ lastname.tld - quite literally. I also have < real_lastname >.tld
I got a firstlast.me domain for myself, if it’s a personal or portfolio site I think that’s a good choice as well. It was also a bit cheaper than some of the “specialty” TLDs too.
I still use my gmail, but a favorite email I saw someone use once was himself@name.com - I though that was perfect but also hilarious

What was frustrating about it

I’m not them, but I’d assume if it’s a common enough name people probably fill it in on unsavory sites that they don’t want to register to with a legitimate email.
They could solve that with a subdomain.
Me@lastname.firstname.tld
I got my own firstnamelastname.net domain when I published my first book and it’s been very nice to have. I’d say go for it.
Depending on your email provider, you should be able to choose whatever mailbox name you want to use. E.g., I use tutanota.com and they receive all email addressed to (anything)@firstnamelastname.net for me. They let me register up to 5 email addresses on that domain for a very low price (for outbound emails), but I still receive any email sent to that domain regardless. YMMV.
I don’t see why you’d include “-mail” before the @ but suit yourself.
It seems most of yall are not reading what I am saying. I said lastname.com is taken so “i have firstname@lastname.com” is not very helpful. I just want to know if what I am thinking of choosing is acceptable
If most people’s answers don’t seem valuable to you then you probably didn’t phrase your question appropriately to get the type of answers you seek.
You did not read their answer correctly. They suggested you to get whatever@firstnamelastname.com implying that your suggestion of @firstname.com does not sound acceptable to them.
I did, but I would generally not use firstname.tld, unless you went the hello@firstname.tld like @m_randall@sh.itjust.works mentioned.
I have (firstletterofname)@LastName.email
I use [first initial][middle initial][last name].net as my custom domain that I use for personal/professional email and haven’t had an issue with it.
I currently have firstlast.me so you could check out other perfectly good TLDs. I’d probably use .me or .net over .io but ymmv.
Definitely not .XYZ or any of the other spam domains. There’s many our there that are a large percentage spam or scam. Try to go with at least one of the top 10 well known.
On the other hand if I were a boss I’d be happy to receive Gmail or protonmail but I wouldn’t use Hotmail or live personally.
If you haven’t considered it already, I’d recommend you to consider a .name domain, that’d be somewhere halfway between the old .com, .net &co. and the tidal wave of new TLDs.
