[Bug] Gifs don’t upload on the instance
I tried to upload a gif but I get this error message when doing so:
{"data":{"msg":"Failed external validation","files":null},"state":"success"}
I can upload any other type of image but gifs always fail for some reason.
Does anyone have any clue what could be going wrong? There’s obviously something wrong with pictrs but I’m not sure what.

We don’t support uploading gifs due to space requirements
I eagerly expect your donation then 😁
Grrrl, you know I’ve already signed up for a recurring donation every month from now until the end of time. I’m along for the ride until the wheels fall off!
Hah, thanks! Hmm, it’s actually a potential idea, to add a whitelist for people who can upload gifs if they’re supporters. I’ll have to see how I could do that
I promise, I would use that power very irresponsibly. You can count on me!
@db0 @WeirdGoesPro would probably require modifying Lemmy to be able to do it unfortunately, and that’s hard because of the Lemmy Devs’ weird insistence on using rust.
I’m already in talks with the pict-rs dev to provide me a necessary feature. If they do it, I will hack the lemmy source myself to achieve it.
Can confirm. Linking gifs, however, works just fine.
I’m not sure any lemmy instance hosts gifs. Most upload and then convert to gifv but even that is shit since it doesnt inline the gif but instead puts it in a player. Best is just to hotlink the gif from a hosting site like imgur.
Do any gifs work for you?
My assumption would be that the content scanner developed by our instance admin doesn’t support gifs (or media with multiple frames). Uploading them to another image host would probably be the solution here IMO
