Immigrant workers from across the US raced to Florida to help rebuild after Hurricane Ian. But now, nearly a year later and days after another major hurricane hit, some of those workers say this time they’re staying home.
If the government really wanted to stop immigrant workers from coming to the US, the best way to do that would be by prosecuting or fining businesses who do things like have 25 workers using fake (sometimes even the same) social security numbers.
If you read the article, that’s exactly what DeSantis’ law does, with predictable results.
And it turned out to be a fucked up disaster, right? Republicans constantly talk as if they want to end all illegal immigration (‘build the wall!’), but they don’t because our economy is set up, by them, to depend on that source of labor. DeSantis wanted the “I super tough on brown person!!” points without seeming to understand that the Republican idea is not to actually stop it.
