Television@piefed.social•George R.R. Martin Reflects on 'Sadness and Depression' Struggles in Personal UpdateEnglish
11·14 days agoI hope not, I want him to get his full accolades while alive. I have no doubt he will come up with a great ending. Though I do wonder if he got spooked by the TV Show ending.

Television@piefed.social•George R.R. Martin Reflects on 'Sadness and Depression' Struggles in Personal UpdateEnglish
30·14 days agoI get it, but Martin HAS set fan expectations. We’ve been teased by Martin about how he’s so close multiple times. He insists he’s furiously working on ASOIAF, but then he’s writing other books, working on multiple TV shows, etc. Again, all this is coming from Martin’s own my mouth. If he enjoys those other projects and wants to work on them, that is his choice to make. That is where he doesn’t owe us anything. But he doesn’t get to lie to us either. And it is pretty clear he has.

Until people take a principled stand and stop buying games with kernel level anti-cheats, nothing will change.

1·3 months agoFriends and I would record off the radio and trade cassettes all the time.
Usually to copy VHS you needed a two VCR setup. My friends and I weren’t really into it, but we knew a couple of adults that were, and we suspected they swapped porn mainly.
The other bit of piracy we did was copying and swapping C64 floppy disks. The computer store in town rented C64 games (and other platforms) and the store owner was a family friend of one of my buddies. He’d supply us with the latest hot copy software as it was released, like Copy B, Copy C, and several others I can remember. So of course we rented tons of games and copied them. We became quite the dealers of our small C64 town group. But we never charged anything because it was mainly our friends.

Technology@lemmy.ml•The Internet Has Become Too American to TrustEnglish
32·2 months agoNo, because it is not true. The Internet started as an idea for decentralized communications that the military could use in case of nuclear war. Then DARPA got the universities involved and it became a way to connect all the uni networks, which the unis used to share research when we were not being nuked.
Edit: When the internet first started to appear, there just wasn’t enough bandwidth to engage in surveillance, even after the uni’s got involved. No one anticipated it exploding into everyone’s household. Surveillance got tacked on later.

But then you’re watching McAfee.
I’d argue it wasn’t any different than last year (10min) because the broadcasts held everything up with every pick. Still way better than the 15 min per pick.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Steam is basically a PC gaming monopoly, so why isn’t anyone mad?English
83·4 months agoNot a monopoly. Only people mad at Steam are competitors. Competitors focus on shareholders, Steam focuses on gamers, you know, their customers.

Technology@beehaw.org•Inside Project Nova, Firefox's biggest redesign in yearsEnglish
4·4 months agoYou have to remember that when Mozilla first formed the goal was to create a mini-OS in the browser with apps and the whole caboodle. With that they then wanted TO DOMINATE THE WORLD!!! But their vision was tricky and taking way longer than expected, so they released Firefox as a temporary band-aid. Firefox went on to be their greatest project while the Mozilla Project burned, fell over in the swap, and was bulldozed into the sea. Over at Mozilla HQ there is still resentment that Firefox is their greatest project. They never gave up on WORLD DOMINATION. It’s like the ego of Marc Andreessen haunts them like a ghost.
With AI, they see their opportunity for WORLD DOMINATION and are going for it again.

Do you want normal bulbs? Or do you want RGB bulbs? If you’re sticking to normal bulbs, they’re cheap and you are likely going to be better off with smart switches. But it does require some hardware spend.

I have no doubt they got the major beats right, but their execution to get to those points was horrendous. After watching season 8 I realized why the fAegon plotline was important. GRRM can get their in a more satisfying way.
