Borgzilla@lemmy.cato Technology@lemmy.world•The ‘90s Internet: When 20 hours online triggered an email from my ISP’s presidentEnglish1·2 years agoAnyone remember download accelerator plus? I’d download stuff at night while everyone was asleep, then pause DAP/disconnect from the Internet in the morning. Rinse and repeat.
Same here. Mandrake 8.2 was a buggy mess, but I have fond memories of it.
Borgzilla@lemmy.cato Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a company secret you can share now that you no longer work there?3·2 years agoFrankly, I don’t see this a a problem as long as the software is up to date and the hardware is sound. I bet there are thousands of SPARC servers out there processing data 24/7 since 1995.

I’m pretty sure the app is great, but I am not a fan of putting all my eggs in the same basket. I will keep using Bitwarden for the time being.
It’s horrible. I’ve had to hack together a shell script to switch between countries using a bunch of openvpn config files. The official app broke my Linux Mint network setup.
Borgzilla@lemmy.catounix like operating system lovers@sh.itjust.works•Is BSD "unix-like" or is it "true Unix"? Is it welcome here?English1·2 years agohttps://vermaden.wordpress.com/2022/06/19/is-freebsd-a-real-unix/
Personally, I consider macOS, BSDs, and Linux real “Unixes”.
I use Debian with a patched version of motif window manager. The 90s never ended:
Yo, a couple years ago I had become fed up with the state of the modern Internet, and I started looking for alternatives. This is what I have found so far:
- Gopher protocol (sdf.org is pretty active)
- Gemini protocol (Modern version of gopher)
- Shared UNIX systems (also called tildes) sdf.org is great!
- RSS
- IRC/Matrix to chat with people
- Session messenger to chat with family
- BBSes via syncterm
- wiby.me and marginalia.nu search engines to find personal web sites
- oldavista.com to browse the ‘Old Net’
- Web forums
- Neocities
- Webrings (They still exist!)
- Lemmy (This is a new one)
The next step for me will be to build my own personal site. The only way to keep the independent web alive is to participate in it.
no alcohol or drugs: I quit drinking a year ago. I’ve saved a LOT of money. In my case, it was a crutch.
Food-wise, I eat very little meat. If I do, I eat pork liver, chicken hearts/gizzards. Offal basically. Fish can be cheap if you buy it flash frozen or canned. Peanut butter, bananas, and grapes are cheap. Instead of bread, I make my own flat bread.
