I think some people are right in maybe implementing a lower level system. I have heard someone say it’s possible to send an alert without a interrupting siren, and as just a notification. An SMS is a possibility, but is quite expensive.

I remember back in the days before the alert system was well known knowledge, a few years ago. I and my family just received random messages saying “Operator test #1” and “Operator Test #2” without any form of warning, people likely weren’t even aware that their phone could even do that (I was because I am a bit of a nerd, lol)

We don’t have an independent system. The UK’s emergency alert system supports local areas. For example, during a storm in January, Cornwall got an alert, but not London. Plymouth once got its own alert.

There’s also alerts prefixed by just the “Issued by the UK Government”, “Issued by the Environment Agency”, and the Plymouth one was “Issued by Plymouth City Council” .

So I think local authorities can issue them using the national system. There’s probably a civil servant in Whitehall it has to pass through first. Don’t want some angry councillor giving off about dog poo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The guidance has been around for a while now to disable alerts on secret phones. We can’t just not send out alert messages because of this.

I’m in Northern Ireland, so didn’t get the alert. But had BBC Radio 4 on at the time and the newsreader got it, so I was confused why my phone was making an alert sound and not showing a message.

Yes, our education system attracts international talent. It should still be that way. And then we charge international students more, which in turn funds local students. It is actually a fantastic strategy.

Unfortunately, I don’t think our way of life, and our British values work in the modern era. We are suffering a deluge of fads, when our society is built on decency and respect. The UK hasn’t broken yet, but if politicans don’t get some common sense anytime soon, it might break. Our electorate is now swayed by fads rather than reason. The politicians are pandering to fads than what makes the country work. Too much privatisation going on.
