politics @lemmy.world•Why liberals, people of color and LGBTQ Americans say they're buying guns
142·4 days agoAmerica’s relationship with guns is darkly fascinating for those of us in other ‘western’ countries. The cliche of the right-wing gun-nut is seemingly way off the mark. You guys have absolutely normalised gun ownership. It’s deeply entrenched in your culture and is married to civil liberty in a way that is alien to most other developed nations.
It seems that the state tempering gun ownership is widely viewed as an intrusive and sinister overreach, whereas for us allowing everyday people to own assault rifles etc would be viewed as a dangerous dereliction of duty by the government.
I totally get the appeal of firearms. We go “clay pigeon shooting” where I lived in the UK. It’s fun. But the idea that the average citizen could legally own a gun is wild to us.
That rebuttal is too fact-heavy for the smooth brains to do much, other than reinforce their fear and suspicion of anything contrary to the moronic ramblings of their beloved grifter.

News@lemmy.world•Elon Musk’s politics cost his firm Tesla more than one million EV sales, report reveals
46·4 days agoFeels like if he could just STFU he’d be golden. I remember when he was widely seen in a positive light. He was practically messianic on Reddit back in the day. Then his innate pettiness came out when he called that diver a peado. It feels like his mask slipped then and everything after just reinforced the fact that he’s an unchecked and uncaring megalomaniac.
Thoughts and prayers, brother. That is heartbreaking.
Hey! I have a tiny dick and a tiny car. Do I get a prize?
Is a 40+ year old dating a 29 year old really deplorable? I agree that using anyone as some sort of status symbol fits that category, but the age thing surely isn’t an issue?
I just find these reductive generalisations a bit silly and divisive. As if anyone born between arbitrary years x and y is part of some sort of united collective that can reasonably critique everyone born between years v and w.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•AI behavioral analysis on factory workers, every step is monitored including attention detection from facial expressions
1·5 days agoUrelated to the original post, but my old man is autistic (undiagnosed, but we’re all pretty sure), and I find the notion that his emotions are not facially conveyed quite heartening.
He seldom smiles - although when he does it’s genuine. I think we as a family have sometimes made the mistake of projecting emotion onto his often expressionless face, and assuming negative ones.
It’s easy to conclude that he’s indifferent or bored, when he’s maybe just not naturally able to convey what he’s feeling through expression, which I hadn’t really considered.
Just sucks me right back to a time in my teens. Such a seductive vibe, those discordant intro notes and that beat is almost psychodelic. Plus she’s so cool and attractive it hurts.
This hits pretty hard this week. First day back after vacation and straight back on the treadmill of dealing with people who apparently put way less effort into trying not to be an asshole as I do. Either that or they’re putting the same in, but their natural state is that of a deranged despot.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Hot Take Time: What is a popular long-running franchise that just needs to stop?
2·5 days agoMy kids are mainlining it most days (when they’re allowed TV). They’re pre-teens and they love it. I don’t mind so much, basically because nostalgia - and at least it’s not Teen Titans Go, which was so fast it gave me a headache

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How did Gen X/Millennials failed at tackling the political issues they criticised in the 90's
71·5 days agoAgree. This guy should go back to Reddit. I’ve been here for a few weeks and he’s actually the first aggressive asshole I’ve seen, so at least that’s something.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do y'all feel joy without alcohol or weed?
9·5 days agoI hear you. I’m a little different these days, but can totally relate. I drink beer usually one night each weekend, and get nicely drunk (pretty wasted). I feel shit the next day and my working week starts grouchy and tired. Fucks up my sleep pattern as well as wrecking my “health goals” (ie being less fat). However, mid week I’m fine and come Friday I’m excited for it.
Rince and repeat for the last 15 years. Before that I was drunk 3-4 nights a week. So I guess that’s progress…

I blame the billionaires, but I despise the bootlickers who somehow think the billionaires got there fair, and square through hard work and that we’re all just jealous. It’s infuriating. I don’t hate successful people in the slightest. But multi-billionaires are parasites.
