“Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.” Professor Faber

  • I feel like this is the kind of condescending comment mentioned above because you assume that I didn’t try those instructions. Maybe I’m more of an average PC user than I thought and just more experienced in Windows than my colleagues, so I know how to fix Windows specific problems 🤷‍♀️

I don’t know what to tell you. I spent 6 hours following all of those instructions trying to get it working and it didn’t work. I reinstalled Windows, downloaded an exe, and had wow running as soon as it updated. That’s the kind of simplicity Windows provides to an average user, a quick install vs 10 different sets of instructions.

Like I said, I’m not giving up on Linux, but my game machine is Windows for now.

  • This is a big reason why most won’t switch. Linux can be difficult to get started with and Windows really makes things a lot easier for the average person.

I tried to switch over to Linux this weekend, I gave up and switched back to Windows last night. I’m not completely computer illiterate, I know how to fix things enough that my colleagues often ask me (the administrative assistant) about simple stuff before going to IT.

I really like the Linux environment and I found alternatives to my frequently used programs, but the one thing I really use my computer most is to play World of Warcraft. I spent hours trying to get it working and I couldn’t. I don’t understand the terminal stuff, GitHub is confusing, and there are so many obscure forums with info I don’t understand. With Windows, the install is incredibly simple and I had my previous setup running within 2 hours.

I WANT to switch to Linux, but until I can run wow a lot easier, it looks like I won’t be. I’m not fully giving up on Linux, it just won’t be on my main machine.

It’s really similar to a conversation I had with a classmate on Android vs iPhone. He just didn’t get why I have an iPhone; “Android is more open”, “you have more options”, etc. I had to explain that it just works; I get a new phone when my old one is no longer supported, then all I have to do is sign in and my phone is back to where it was. Yes, it’s a walled garden, yes there are things Apple does that I don’t like, but the phone itself is simple and easy to upgrade. It just works.

I read too many books to remember all of the plots. I recommend books to people based on the vibe I get from a book. “Oh! You like dystopian romance? Try out the Mercenary Librarians books! I don’t remember what happened, but I loved them!”

  • When I was young, Lyra Silvertongue from His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. A highly intelligent girl who is curious, fearless, and doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do. A bit of a troublemaker.

Now, probably someone closer to The Mercenary Librarians by Kit Rocha. Strong women who work to better their community in a dystopian world, all while going on missions to save books and literature. (I use my library branches a lot, I purchase from indie bookstores, I buy cheap used books at the library bookshop and deposit them in neighborhood little free libraries, etc.)

  • THANK YOU! I will check them out.

I have been a Windows user since I started using computers in the 90s and wow has been my biggest hesitation. But with all the stuff Microsoft is doing with AI, ads, and data, it’s the first time I’ve considered and started actively looking into switching to Linux. There are so many instructions and things I don’t understand, but it’s nice to have something recommended by someone who used it. So again, thank you!!!

You’re the pineapple blossom post! That’s such a nice picture.

I’ve been intentionally trying to be less of a lurker and more active in comments. !books@lemmy.world is one place that I’ve tried to be more active because I love reading, thinking, and talking about books. I was also posting updates about a green lynx spider on my lemmy.world account before I switched to piefed, this is a good reminder for me to post an update on my girl (RIP) and her beautiful little babies.

Lots of us lurkers need to be more active, myself included.

  • Yeah, but it’s one of my favorite shows and book series of all time, so I wanted to purchase it to support everyone involved. I’ve also been buying the audiobooks to support the authors and narrator.

I’m personally ok with pirating it elsewhere after I purchase though, so I do intend on downloading it at some point, I just haven’t gotten there yet. And stuff like that, I watch exclusively on my tv in the living room, which is not hooked up to a computer.

  • Oh I know, I’ve been looking into it recently. I remember days when gaming was the sole reason for not switching to Linux, but I’m also aware that it’s improved a lot since then.

I’m sure I can get it working, but I don’t feel comfortable switching completely until I’ve played with Linux a bit, which is exactly what I’ve started doing. I’ve started backing up documents and files onto separate hard drives so I can prepare to switch, I’m just not quite ready yet.

  • I haven’t made the switch off of Windows, but I have started dabbling in Linux. I am ok with tech, better than the average person, but I don’t know anything about programming or coding or any of it. I have a Raspberry Pi, some other electronic stuff, and a book that is project based teaching of python. I’ve spent the last month or so reading up on self hosting, Linux, and other open source stuff.

My biggest hesitation is World of Warcraft. It’s the only game I play, it’s the only game I’ve ever really played, and I don’t want to lose access to that. I have started looking into how wow is run on Linux. But I’m not ready to fully switch yet.

  • The enshittification of Amazon made me sad. I was an early user and I remember buying my college textbooks books there. I used them off and on for years until a friend made me part of his “family” for Prime. Then I got my own Prime and started using it too much. I had already been debating dropping it over the last few years. Shipping was taking longer than promised, clothes and product eventually became much lower quality, and the promo for garbage no name products made me frustrated.

I held on solely because of The Expanse series. Then they wanted extra money so I could not have commercials while watching my show. That on top of the nonsense the company has been doing in other areas made me decide to buy The Expanse series on iTunes and to chuck Amazon.

I do not miss it and I save so much money by not having it.
