I was not expecting much at this point. A general Direct that’s 45 minutes long sounds pretty snazzy. Here’s hoping for some cool stuff.

Creating separate threads surfaces them to people’s feeds, and gives a reminder for folks to reflect and give another update. If it’s a single pinned thread that just stays, I don’t think it would have any visibility or longevity (activity-wise).

Pretty typical pattern across threadiverse, from what I’ve seen.

I played around with it, and it does seem to work sometimes. I don’t get it… I tried filtering searches for ‘heavy metal before:2010’ and ‘slop before:2021 after:2018’, and results appeared accurate. But if I try “openai before:2022” a good majority of the results are from the past few days or weeks. It makes zero sense all around why those filters wouldn’t be absolute.

Security issues for sure, that’s what I mean to acknowledge by saying it takes some level of maintenance.

But like, the feature set and UX don’t have to keep improving forever, IMO. The draw of something like this should be the community, the humans you interact with.

Amazing how Google used to be a good search engine company, vs how terrible YouTube search is.

It’s always strange to me that software can never be complete or mature, it’s straight from ‘getting new features’ to ‘dead’. Not picking on the comment in OP, the announcement post reads like that too mostly. I get software requires some level of maintenance, but I wish we treated feature-complete as a good thing, something to celebrate.

Anyway, it was also weird to me how Tildes didn’t seize the moment with the Reddit drama a couple years ago. As I recall, they just weren’t trying to be the target of that migration. That was the first time I’d heard of it. Seems a nice place, from all my impressions of it.

If I could just block every channel made after… idk, 2022, that would pretty well solve the issue… Is there a way to do that?

When searching, you can add before:2022 for this effect. I realize that doesn’t help with the recommendation engine, but it’s something.

Only once, this past year. (Not quite alone tho, my wife was with me.)

I started feeling nauseated and heavily fatigued Christmas Eve, and by Christmas Day I was pretty sure I had some kind of stomach bug. Sucks to be laid out in bed sick on a holiday.

But also kinda nice to defer the celebrations a couple days and spread out those family visits.

The elevator thing is interesting.

At first, you just would think it works on a delay.

People notice that they don’t really do anything. Rumor spreads that the buttons aren’t even wired.

Eventually I remember coming across an article that explained most of the time it’s a glitch. The button is telling it to close, but there’s some kind of timing limitation that means the auto-close just happens first.

But yeah, for both I’m sure there’s a lot of variation.

When I was learning it I managed to get I think a 51 or 52? Can’t remember now where I was writing them down. But I never could get my average of 5 below a minute.

Yeah, these are annoying!

The main thing I’ve changed that helps with that, is I’ve started putting the example sentence on the front of the card.

I like it for a few reasons. The point at hand - disambiguation. A lot of times in context, it’s obvious which answer I should remember. But also, then I read the example sentences more often. When they’re on the back, I tend to skip over them if I’m powering through several reviews. In the case of Japanese, this also gives me an opportunity to try and read the whole sentence w/o furigana.

Downside is that the example sentence can make it too obvious. This is actually totally fine IMO. The whole point of the Anki card is to prepare you to actually use language. If the word is clear in context, great, that’s the whole point. It’s also not too hard to ignore the sentence if you are in that mood.

But then, sometimes I still mess up similar words even in context. Rather than let it leech, I add a caution note.

Edit: re-reading, I realized that my mind went to a slightly different kind of disambiguation. Still, I think the answers apply all the same.

But yeah, sadly the attention sucking mega-sites and apps take plenty of people out of the market for blogging (and other nicer communications). From their perspective, it’s often “why go to all the trouble to self publish, only for most of my audience to never see me because I’m not on [big social media site]”. The new ways are both easier and reach more people.

When I was a kid, I saw my mom cut expired cards in half when throwing them away.

Ever since then, I always strategically cut my old cards into several pieces, making sure to break up the number, chip, date, name, etc. I’ll throw them away in separate trash cans and maybe wait to throw some pieces out after we take out the trash for a week.

Lol, it’s pure silliness, no one is desperately piecing cards together out of my trash. (In reality, you’d probably just find compromised cards online, or go hit someone with a wrench.)

But this headline makes me feel ever so slightly justified in my goofy behavior.

This was a couple months ago, but I had a conversation with a college-age extended family member. He brought up some games he was playing, mentioning Call of Duty.

I said something along the lines of ‘oh, I liked so and so feature that was in World at War or Black Ops 1’. Kid hits me with “wow, those are old. idk if I was even born yet.”

Fingers crossed for a PlayStation disc or non-keycard Switch cart… think I’ll probably be let down.

Still cool that it’s finally getting an official release stateside.
