The Master (as in Master Barber) has a spicy Shawn Maher scent paired with Heather’s Sego base. It is intended as a barbershop scent, certainly, but I’ve not been to a barber shop here in the states that smelled this good. I paired this with the Pinaud talc which, in fact, does remind be of barbershops that I’ve been to in my youth (during the Paleolithic age).

For today’s Theme Thursday, I’ll cite Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers Band. I’ve attended a bunch of their concerts through the years and have been listening to a recording off of the mixing board of a concert at the Beacon Theater that I attended a couple of years before Gregg died.

I like this soap and fragrance, but the scent strength is on the light side. More European than American in that way, though Elysian is based in Pennsylvania. In any case, I think that the owner of Elysian appears to be trying to produce a quality product and also distinguish herself, somehow, from others in the crowded wetshaving space. I have two of her products and consider both a very nice change of pace but not worthy of an Austere August run.

Love the Frio 14. Thanks go to @djundjila for being the enabler on this.

  • That’s a very good question. I’ve been killing the edge on knives since it was first explained (by the president of Shapton US) that it is a “good idea” to remove any fatigued metal at the apex before building a final, finished edge. He’s an avid woodworker, so he called this jointing the edge. I have not, ever, seen analysis that would support fatiguing at the edge. It’s plausible, but I kind of doubt that collisions with surface abrasives that remove metal are leaving metal there long enough for it to fatigue significantly. I do this more because I feel that it “can’t hurt”, than I feel that it has structural merit. I often forget to kill the edge both on knives and razors, and I have yet to discern a difference.

Marilyn is a haunting scent. It definitely has a way of triggering memories, but I’m not certain I would be as positive about it if I did not have the EdT.

Today’s shave was a test shave for this razor. Here’s the video. The shave was exceptionally close and, while I enjoyed it, I think most would find the edge to be “too sharp”; meaning that there’s too much edge feel. I think that with a bit more stropping, the edge will develop a more gentle feel to it. For me, a full-on BBS shave that was very comfortable and that left the skin feeling good.
