News@lemmy.world•DoorDasher in Indiana arrested for allegedly pepper-spraying delivery
15·8 hours agoStevenson initially agreed to meet with the sheriff’s office, though the agency later said she backed out. Detectives subsequently obtained a warrant to arrest her.
This makes me laugh. She agreed to meet with the sheriff, then realized how badly she had fucked herself. Surprisingly, the problem didn’t magically disappear.
If you have absolutely no standards, it’s easy. If you’re trying to filter out the assholes who will make your life hell, then you’re right, it’s not easy.

World News@lemmy.world•Spacecraft from Chinese launch nearly slammed into Starlink satellite, SpaceX says
32·1 day agoI often wonder if environmental degradation could be the end of the line for humans, and if it might even be Great Filter material. Have other civilizations discovered the usefulness of fossil fuels, only to be ignorant, then apathetic, about their major downsides?

Technology@lemmy.world•Quilter's AI just designed an 843‑part Linux computer that booted on the first try. Hardware will never be the same.
16·2 days agoI like that it’s basing its behaviors on the laws of physics. No messy human language, no opinions, slants, or agendas. AI just isn’t ready (or, possibly, will never be ready) to handle that shit. Plus, it’s not stealing work created by humans under the guise of “training”.
I assume it still relies on datacenters, which are themselves ethically questionable. Still, this seems to be the “flavor” of AI that I hate the least.
Was Best Buy paying her a retainer? No? Then she’s gonna go where the work is.

The trick is that we’d have to remain consistent and reliable across administrations. I don’t know if that’s possible anymore. Too many fascist jackasses have been allowed to have their way.
If she stays a two-dimensional, apathetic party girl, I’ll be disappointed. I doubt that’s her entire personality, though. Can’t really learn much about a character with 1 minute of screen time.

News@lemmy.world•Here's what Canadian provinces are doing with all the US liquor they pulled off shelves
16·6 days agoIn Canada, alcohol sales are largely controlled by provincial governments, which operate boards that manage the import and sale of most wine and spirits, giving them broad authority over what is sold. Only Alberta and Saskatchewan have a fully-privatised liquor retail system.
Privatized businesses are more concerned with profits than the public interest? Shocking.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Crows are intelligent birds and learn quickly – even from each other. In Sweden, they are used to collect cigarette butts and bring them to a machine that automatically rewards them with peanuts.

I don’t think the Confederates were all thoroughly evil people (hold on, I’m not some scumbag apologist. I’m going somewhere with this). I’m sure many of them loved their families, and were kind to other white people. It’s not like there were millions of people drowning puppies for fun and burning each other’s houses down.
What made the Confederates villains was that many of them didn’t think Black people deserved basic human rights. To me, that’s the evil part.
Where did Vance get that “ten years ago” shit, though? There have been abolitionists for as long as there’s been slavery.
