400V in residential sounds exciting. That’s one way to cut down on wire cost I guess.

Yup. That’s why people use smaller heating elements and slowly heat up lots of water in an insulated tank instead. Just the difference in the cost of wire you need to run is massive.

I’m an electrician. I haven’t been impressed by most of the tankless systems I’ve hooked up. I would definitely go with gas unless you are willing to run some serious power. Most hot water tanks pull about 3000-4500W or 12.5-18.75A at 240V. A good tankless system is upwards of 18000W or 75A at 240V and some can be around 36000W which works out to 150A. This will easily be the single largest electrical load in your house, unless you also have an electric furnace or something. Depending the size of your electrical service and what else you have in your house you may need to upgrade the electrical service going to your house as well. Most Residential Electrical services are usually 100-200A in my area.

4·26 days agoNo multiplayer paywall, but they’ll probably try to charge you some sort of subscription anyway that’ll end up costing more in the long run.

8·1 month agoMan, I was soooo excited about the PS5, but then it turned into such a shit show to get one that I just put my money into my PC and I never even got around to picking one up when availability became more reasonable. I don’t think I’d ever really want to get back into the console gaming space anymore.

Gaming@lemmy.world•What's the state of Linux gaming with Proton?English
3·1 month agoI generally play single player games and have had little to no problems. Any issues I’ve had have required very little tinkering to fix and I’ve solved them all by simply searching online for the problem and finding out that its a common issue and someone has posted a step by step fix.
The biggest issue I’ve had is with baulders gate 3 multiplayer which I eventually fixed, but I can’t remember how anymore. Single player worked fine right out of the gate.
I’ve also had better luck playing older games on Linux vs Windows. Heroic Launcher also works great for anything you’ve purchased on GOG, Epic, and Amazon too.
I had been thinking about it for a while. I had played with linux before on an old laptop, but not seriously, though I had been getting more frustrated with windows every time it updated it seemed. I then got the urged to play an old game of mine that i had picked up on a steam sale recently that i hadn’t played in years. It took hours of tinkering and web sleuthing to get it to run, then i played 20 min had to run to town, so I shut down my PC and bam. Windows update. Game no longer worked again. The next weekend I installed Linux mint, then Fedora, then the weekend Bazzite the weekend after that. The game I wanted to play on windows worked right out of the box on Proton. I’ve had less problems overall with Linux than Windows too. Most of the problems I did have early on were also self inflicted. Pro-tip don’t try to remove then re-install the lastest python manually in mint. It breaks everything apparently, luckily (unlike Windows) its very easy to re-install. It’s been about 7 months now.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada Post’s Moment Of Reckoning May Finally Be Here
5·2 months agoI think most of the problems with Canada Post is the commercialisation of it. 95% of my personal mail delivered to my community mailbox is flyers and scam inivitations to MLM’s. I’ve stopped regularly checking it every day because its always all garbage that I imeadiatly throw out. I usually check it every other week now. Plus if I get a parcel its almost always just a slip that I have to take to shoppers drug mart (not the more easily accessible post office). Its literally more convenient to get packages delivered by anyone else, because they will actually bring them to my door instead of waiting an hour in line at Shoppers so that an underpaid Shoppers drug mart employee can get me my package that any other service would have put directly into my hands.

5·2 months agoI’m a contractor that goes to tons of houses every week. The Maple MAGA crowd hasn’t gone away, they’re just quieter now with all this 51st state BS. I used to have to deflect a ton of MAGA propaganda when i went to customers houses, now people seem to just turn off FOX news when i walk through the living room, or test the waters with vague comments about Carney. I try to steer the conversation away from politics and towards literally anything else. Pro tip, people love talking about their pets.

2·2 months agoThanks for the recommendation. Once I found the “n” I mistyped as “m” in one of the file directories it actually went quite well. I looked at setting up sonarr & radarr, but its really just me and my partner using it right now, so I’ll put that on the back burner until I get more storage.

Self-hosting@slrpnk.net•Options for protecting home IP on my self hosted home srver
1·2 months agoSo, I already pay for Proton VPN, mostly for the E-Mail, but I do use the vpn currently on my main PC to torrent, which I then manually transfer to my server over the network, but I would like to eliminate the middleman and torrent directly to the server, while still being able to easily remote in. I run CasaOS on my Homelab and I was planning on installing qbittorrent in a container, probably through Portainer. I’m already running Soulseek on the server the same way (originally I was running slskd, but it was overly complicated to set up and once it was set up and working there were lots of upload errors and I didn’t like the UI, so I changed to a Nicontine+ docker), but that’s just open to the web.

2·2 months agoYeah, sounds about right. Server is on my home network and I’ve forwarded the applicable wireguard ports on my router so I can remote in. I just want to make sure that if I’m running a torrent client on my server or on my phone while I’m connected remotely then I won’t be getting angry letters from my ISP.

Yeah, although electric heat is 100% efficient it takes a lot of energy to heat water quickly. You’re better off going with gas for hot water on demand. I imagine the unit price is more, but the install price will probably be lower.
