The fuck you talking about? The Ferengi episodes were bloody awesome.

The Magnificent Ferengi remains my fave.

Kinda hard to defend “Profit and Lace” when it didn’t land well then and is seen in a much worse light now.

DS9 took them from comic relief to fleshed-out, interesting characters with a varied culture and differing opinions. Some of the best actors on the show wear lobes. DS9s work on the Ferengi is one of the main reason it’s my favorite Trek.

If its good its not filler its character development its sad newer trek doesn’t have room for that and why they feel like railroad DND campaign.

It’s not just a new Trek issue though, it’s a general issue with modern serial TV storytelling. Series have gotten more cinematic since (I think) Game of Thrones, and more cinematic productions cost more money, so the seasons get shorter and the storylines have to be more streamlined.

Yeah I agree 100% star trek is just really important to me. What kills me is that kind of story telling works when its based on a book. That’s why it worked for game of thrones up until the books ran out then it face planted.

What kills me is what they should be doing is making TNG level TV but using modern tech to make it way cheaper.

I do agree. There are some great cinematic series, like early GoT, Star Wars’ Andor or (early) The Boys. But not every series can or even should be trying to be basically such a multi-hour movie, because that means we lose other formats like these long running shows that have room for experiments, eexploration of character and concept, etc.

Related to that, there is also the discussion about release schedule, like should the whole season be dumped at once so you can bingewatch or rather new episodes weekly. These more cinematic shows are fine to be dumped at once, but weekly releases do have their perks, too, and if it just is to discuss it with coworkers in the break room next day. And a series format of 20+ episodes with self-contained stories is better suited for a bit-by-bit release.

There is room for everything on these spectrums, and it’s sad the focus of studios and producers seems to be so narrow.

That’s how I felt for the first half of TNG and the first couple episodes of DS9. But Armin Shimerman, Aron Eisenberg, and Max Grodenchik brought so much depth to the Ferengi that it became a real joy to see plots focus on them.

Eh. I knew many would disagree. I do like the Magnificent Ferenghi, though. I mean, it even has Iggy Pop. The one where Quark sells weapons is alright. And Little Green Men was good. Ok, maybe I like half the Ferenghi episodes.
