Am I the only one who has a pit in the bottom of my stomach when I think about the future of humanity?
I just don’t see a way out for us. Every day, the news gets worse. War is ramping up globally, not just in one place, but everywhere, like a powder keg with fuses burning from all sides.
And then there’s the AI race. I keep thinking about Max Tegmark’s breakdown of the 12 outcomes. Even the “good” ones seem terrifying when you look at them from a materialist, working-class perspective. It feels like no matter which path we go down, we’re the ones who lose. Whether it’s total obsolescence or a surveillance state, the promise of “progress” seems to benefit only a handful of oligarchs while the rest of us just wait for the shoe to drop.
It feels like we’re all just pretending everything is fine while the foundations crumble. Is the collective numbness the only way to cope? Or am I just doomscrolling too much?
Lots of people are trying to change things and many of us know that even with change things will not be great. your right though. wealth disparity is high and those who have the wealth are not looking to have a graceful and equitable fall. So it will likely lead to violence at some point. Many of us though would like to work together for degrowth and prioritization of resources toward maximum renewable and regenerative processes. No matter what it won’t be great but it could be bearable but many want good times for themselves at the expense of all others and the world.
Look at WW1 era.
The biggest war in human history, with weapons unimaginable only a few years before.
Poison gas, tanks, airplanes dropping bombs from the sky. Add to that the Spanish Influenza that killed millions.
Humanity survived that mess.
Is a shit storm coming? Probably. Will you be affected? Again, almost certainly yes. Will humanity as a whole get through it? I think so. We’re crazy, but we’re also pretty smart.
While I appreciate the sentiment, the situations are completely different. Humans will probably never completely exterminate ourselves through war. We might kill a lot of people and struggle to return, but you really can’t just kill everybody.
We can, however, make our planet incompatible with human life, and are barreling towards that at top speed. Doesn’t matter if you can’t shoot or bomb every individual human in the world if you just make it so that they can’t make food.
Nope, we are not sleepwalking, we are on the bus from Speed, heading toward a cliff wall, with the bomb detonation speed continously increasing.
