This is so bad for optics if actually true. I don’t care one way or another but this will absolutely affect the narrative.

Seems like this satanic temple has very much in common with secular liberal values from europe.

Ironic username aside, it would seem you’re making wild assumptions about something without knowing the most basic information about it. You couldn’t have done the bare minimum research before going off?

I don’t expect that of people anywhere, it’s sad but true. I never truly lose hope but have realised it’s not healthy to expect better. It sucks that fully uninformed reactions are the basic thing but people keep proving that’s the case.

Username not ironic. I’ve gone through many flavors of both theistic and atheistic Satanism and see people end up becoming rigid with belief. Even TST keeps infighting and causing schisms within itself. It’s all so fucking stupid and we should seek to better the self through the self and stop using these pseudo-spiritual crutches. We should build secular humanist groups to get ourselves out of this Christofascist quagmire and not play by their rules and definitions.

The Satanic Temple isn’t a religion in the traditional sense. They also do a lot of activism. Here are their tenets:

I One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

II The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

III One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

IV The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one’s own.

V Beliefs should conform to one’s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one’s beliefs.

VI People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one’s best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

VII Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

They’re different than the Church of Satan, associated with LaVey Satanism which is a bit more what people tend to think of, though that’s also still technically atheist

I’ve known about them for a long time. Since before Hail Satan? came out. I support their mission but know many people who begin treating it as others do traditional religion and I think we’d be better off fighting our battles through secular humanist groups.

Try a Unitarian universalist Church. No Satan. No God.

The Satanic Temple is a non-theistic sect of Satanism. They don’t believe in an actual Satan, he’s more like a symbol for self-betterment

        I know what satanism is.

It’s not self betterment. It’s just selfish.

It’s not exactly popular to talk about it here in this community, but the satanic temple REALLY sucks as an organization too.

Upper leadership is rife with predatory behavior, Lucien Greaves has said a lot of really problematic racist and white supremacist stuff, and there’s a difference between schools of Satanism within the temple. Basically, there’s an amoral, “might makes right” interpretation of Satanism that can act as an ideological framework to enable all sorts of abuse, and then there’s the “one’s own body is inviolable, support queer liberation” style of Satanism. The upper leadership (in my experience) is mostly the former type of Satanist, whereas the general membership are the latter. So the org has a lot of problems.

Some of it’s my own personal experience, I’ve been a Satanist for the last 15 or so years. But some of it’s also from Dead Domain’s videos on the Satanic Temple.

IIRC, The Satanic Temple started as a satirical project (“if cruelty and oppression is Christian, what if Satanism was about being nice?”) and then ran away. When the flaws in the organisation/the founders’ histories came to light, dissatisfied members/supporters formed new groups more sincerely committed to basically humanism and social justice in Satanistic theatrical costume, such as the Global Order of Satan.

Both of these groups are still ahead of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan, which started as an Ayn Rand-inspired backlash against 1960s hippie peace-and-love, but these days would be indistinguishable from Republican Christianity except for the symbols.

It’s not any more corrupt than the christian organizations. Would I love it to be a perfect blameless foil? Sure. But sparing that, it tries to be kind and accepting, faithful to a creed Christians have allowed themselves to forget en masse.

If you are of that flock, you need to study more. Look into the role of Satan—how it evolves between the testaments; who wrote the gospels, when, and under what political pressures. It’s convenient to believe what you’re told—but I recommend the hard liberty before the easy yoke. One should not indulge in such decided opinions without an understanding.

That’s a great option, as they’re extremely welcoming to everyone. This is probably the wrong community for it, though!
