Adding monitoring to my self-hosted services:

• a bunch of different Prometheus exporters report data
• Prometheus collects data, remembers it, and fires alerts
• Grafana draws charts of the same data
• AlertManager decides when to alert, and deduplicates alerts
• ntfy sends push notifications to my phone

What for? My grocery store (and every other merchant I frequent) already knows and tracks what I buy. Nothing would stop them selling the data to advertisers, even if I paid for my bread in Bitcoin.

Get an old Android phone, possibly with a dead screen (bootloader must be unlocked). Flash PostmarketOS on it, or (if not supported) Termux. Its idle usage (with WiFi on, screen off) may be considerably less than 1w. It’ll have considerable amounts of CPU cores and RAM, more than a cheap VPS.

It’s actually good to have the wrong layout printed. You’ll get multiple times the confusion, especially with non-touch-typists, who’ll just assume they hit all the wrong keys, and will try again and again.

Yes, there are more bastards around, but you needn’t listen to them. Use the economy of scale that the thundering herds bring, then ignore them. Self-host private spaces for friends. Contribute to open source.

Use AI to learn. Instead of wasting energy to generate silly junk, use them to debug and fix bugs in open-source software.

Really? ISTR I had to wait until enough traffic accumulates, then run some aircrack-ng computation, to make it happen, on WEP, and WPA was crackproof. Oh well, I must be misremembering, or maybe times have moved on.

Nah, that used to work with WEP. Nowadays, anyone with half an axon is on something more secure.
