I have never met anyone who has read Alastair Reynolds’ Revelation Space series. It’s one of my favourite sci-fi’s and I can’t even get someone I know to read it, everyone thinks it’s boring :)
Professional industrial and jewelry designer (here’s my Bēhance portfolio), hard-sci-fi enjoyer, cat lover and procrastinator. Started a few communities on kbin: Urban Details, Industrial Design and Jewelry Design, feel free to join if you find those interesting.
You can tip me if you like or use something I made.

How come no one mentioned it yet?
Guys, check out this short film :)
This is amazing :)
Idk, that’s more of a “not yet finished” thing rather than “failed” imo
Oh right, didn’t consider some may remain sealed, that’s cool.
Out of weird drinks, I’m betting on kykeon, an LSD-like psychedelic drink made from ergot-infected barley :)
Considering that it sank like 2000 years ago, would there be any detectable molecular traces left to figure out amphoras’ contents? Or would everything be destroyed by now?
Why do you feel like matrix has failed? I joined it recently and to me it looks like it’s kinda growing.
Locking social norms at some predetermined stage is a great way to curb all progress. Like, slavery was a social norm at some point.
Reposting my comment from another thread to add a bit of context in case anyone’s curious.
So I read the paper, and here’s a tldr about how their material apparently gains its properties.
It is hypothesized that superconductivity properties emerge from very specific strains induced in the material. Hence why most of the discovered superconductors require either to be cooled down to very low temperatures, or to be under high pressures. Both shrink the material.
What this paper claims is that they have achieved a similar effect chemically by replacing some lead ions with copper ions, which are a bit smaller (87 pm for Cu vs 133 pm for Pb). This shrinks the material by 0.48%, and that added strain induces superconductivity. This is why it apparently works at room temperature — you no longer need high pressures or extreme cold to create the needed deformation.
Can’t really comment on how actually feasible or long-lasting this effect is, but it looks surprisingly promising. At least as a starting point for future experiments. Can’t wait for other labs’ reproduction attempts. If it turns out to be true, this is an extremely important and world-changing discovery.
I googled it and it looks like ~80% of their water comes from within the state, and the rest mostly comes from Colorado, and I guess those guys wouldn’t object to a water deal even in case of secession. Not sure if secession is even possible in US though.
As was mentioned in another comment, it’s a statistical term that measures the standard deviation. It basically tells you how “far” from the center of the bell curve you are with your data points. The higher the sigma, the less likely it is that an observed event was a fluke.
For example, 1-sigma event has a ~37% chance of being a “coincidence”, and 2-sigma has a chance of about 4.5%.
In science, 3-sigma (0.135%) is the first publishable certainty, it’s when something becomes significant enough to start a discussion.
And 5-sigma is the most common threshold for claiming discovery. 5-sigma events have a 0.0000287% chance of being a coincidence or some random happenstance. Or one in 3.5 million.
Higgs boson discovery was announced after 5-sigma certainty was reached. It means that if that particle didn’t actually exist, the chance of the experiments producing observed results would be 1 in 3.5 mln.
Right? I’m funging on a token right now.
Non-Fungible Tokens, or NFTs for short are shaking up the virtual universe, transforming how we vibe with digital assets.
Oh hello fellow humans. Let’s vibe with our digital assets for a bit since it’s something we do so often in our virtual universe. What assets do you especially enjoy vibing with?
Some Pythagori in this thread as well :)
Weren’t these “real people, not actors” actually actors? I remember reading about these ads catching a lot of flak for that some time ago.
Yep. And then opening threads in those communities looking for new mods. But the overwhelming majority of replies seem to be either trolling or giving them shit. Whatever few people volunteer are heavily downvoted, and a lot of those are either powermods moderating dozens or hundreds of subs, or people you do not want to have as mods anyway. So whatever thoughtful and insightful moderation there once was seems to be in heavy decline.
I saw this article posted in another thread and it seems to explain a lot. Not sure how close it is to reality, but it looks like nostalgia is at least a partial reason for this change.
Yep. Fucking nostalgia.
You’re probably joking, but I’ll comment anyway. It won’t affect LLMs at all. ChatGPT just answers the question and discusses the paradox. LLM’s function is basically just to construct sentences, so there’s nothing really that can potentially infinitely loop. It doesn’t “think” about paradoxes.
So I’ve just tried it with chatGPT, and it replied normally. I asked it why it wasn’t bothered by Cyrillic letters, and it answered this:
I am designed to understand and generate text in multiple languages, including those that use the Cyrillic alphabet like Russian, Bulgarian, and others. So, Cyrillic letters don’t bother me. You can continue the conversation in either English or a language that uses the Cyrillic alphabet if you prefer.
So it really depends on the model, I guess. Don’t rely too much on this advice.
It’s in development btw
