I fucking hate DST. It’s like dog diarrhoea splashed over a fat girls tiddies.

I know a lot of people hate it, surely it’s time for this moronic practice to end.

So who do I email about this? Is it my MP?

It would be your state Member of Parliament. Make sure not to bother with your federal member, because they can’t do anything about it.

It might be handy to have some evidence to support your personal preferences. Here are a few:

I’m particularly a fan of the penultimate one linked there, which states:

In summary, the scientific literature strongly argues against the switching between DST and Standard Time and even more so against adopting DST permanently.

As a side note, it’s “daylight saving time”, not “savings”. The name is supposed to refer to the idea that DST somehow “saves daylight” (so it’s daylight-saving). It’s not a savings account.

      Jesus Christ.

Send me your postcode. I’ll go door-to-door to find out who I need to praise for such a comprehensive answer.

Haha no personal thanks needed. Just go out there and be a force for good in the world! (In this case: convincing people & politicians to abandon this deadly practice.)

I saw that article. I could believe that a majority support it, but something feels hinky with their polling to come up with that 80% figure. It just doesn’t line up with my anecdotal experiences at all. Most people I’ve talked to about this (Melbourne) are either ambivalent or against DST. Almost all of the people working in mental health I’ve met are against it due to the increase in suicides. Same with most of the Queensland expats I’ve met, though that might be related to actually experiencing living it for the first time. Obviously all of this is anecdotal, but it just does not seem to compute with that article’s figures of overwhelming support. I should be clear that support for permanent DST was split amongst the people I’ve talked too, but the adjustments have been pretty much universally hated.

For an example same-sex marriage has overwhelming support in Australia these days, 75% as of last year. And I have met way, way more people against DST than against same-sex marriage.

Suicides, heart problems, traffic crashes, there’s a whole host of scientific literature pointing to the problems with daylight saving time. This is not anecdotal, it’s extremely well-attested published research.

Sorry, you’re right the science isn’t anecdotal, I didn’t mean to imply that. I was referring to the anecdotal nature of my “polling” of people in the mental health field. They all personally detested it because of the wealth of scientific evidence that you mention. The poll (in the article) just doesn’t line up with my experiences in Victoria. I could see there being a majority, as I probably do run more in circles that don’t approve of it. But an overwhelming 89% majority here? 1 in 10 opposing doesn’t seem like even close to accurate data. Unless it just happens that everyone I know is part of a vocal 11% of DST-haters.

Oh sorry yeah, I understood how you meant it, and I didn’t mean to imply otherwise. When I brought up “anecdote vs science” it was more meant to play as a parallel to your comment, rather than a refutation. Sorry for the confusion.

Well, here in Tasmania and I hate it. I can understand Qld wanting to move , so they align with the Southern states but what a fuck.

I’d like to see the entire nation move to UTC+11 and just stay there for fucks sake.

I genuinely don’t understand the anger. Heaps of people like it. Lot of people on here doubting that, but most of the people I know are either in favour of it or neutral. Other than updating the microwave clock, and once a year adjusting for maybe 2 days to new wake up time, what else is there? What is so bad?
