The same day Taylor Swift posted a message encouraging her followers to register to vote, over 35,000 people reportedly made a “Run (Taylor’s Version)” to do so on Vote.org.

Vote.org saw record-breaking traffic to our site this week as we celebrated National Voter Registration Day, a highly encouraging sign of voter enthusiasm especially among newly eligible voters. Time and time again young people are showing up and demonstrating they care about their rights and access to the ballot box,” Andrea Hailey, CEO of Vote.org said in a release.

The American multi-genre singer-songwriter’s post also linked to the organization’s website, according to the release. In the Instagram post, Swift called on her army of fans, also known as “Swifties” to “[r]egister to vote in less than 2 minutes” via the nonprofit’s site.

I find it cringe that a celebrity has so much sway with her fans that all the very real, very important reasons to vote don’t sway them, but her asking them does sway them.

To be fair, most people don’t listen or care to listen to politics. Don’t blame them.

But many DO listen and care about their entertainment. I’ll take it if it means people who wouldn’t get involved do now. Especially if her fans are of the younger progressive variety.

You should read some interviews she gave around 2020-2022! She talks about 2016 onward and how she decided that she needed to be political and start using her influence.

On a more subtle note, she used to hold really large 4th of July parties, but those fell off in like 2017-18 because of her distaste for the state of things.

I know I sound like her publicist haha. Her music helped me out when I was younger, but it helped me out even more during the pandemic when I was in a pretty rough spot. I think it was Folklore where she went from a more pop sound to a folksy sound, and I absolutely love it. Her music then onwards has been really introspective and self critical and brutally honest. It’s incredibly relatable.

It was her publicist that made her have those parties and never give any political statements. 2018 coincided with when she left her old publisher. She has talked about being pushed to apolitical as possible so as to appeal to conservative America.

That sounds right. I can’t remember what she said exactly, but I could swear she also said once that she was taught in country music to be apolitical and not speak out.

I have to say, I’m really glad she left that publicist. She seems genuinely happier.

        So tell us-

What does it take for you to like someone? Don’t be shy now. Be honest. What would someone have to do for to to become a fan of them as a human being?

Nice of her to do this, but I have to say, for someone who can break Ticketmaster’s website due to sales volume, 35k is kind of paltry.

I’m not trying to let the perfect be the enemy of the good here, I’m more castigating her fans than her. They’ll go nuts to get tickets to a concert, but ask them to register to vote, not even vote, and do it online… too hard.

I was listening to NPR the other day and there was a segment where they were just talking to a convicted murderer, in prison, who was raving about how much he loves Taylor Swift. I’m not sure what the point of the segment was other than that Taylor Swift is very popular.

It’ll be an interesting thing to see how this affects politics. Swift’s core demographic- young, relatively affluent white women- don’t have the best record when it comes to turning out to vote, so if she mobilizes significant change there that could make a difference. On the other hand, affluent white women that do vote have tended in recent years to vote for the patriarchy. Will an influx of younger women voters, especially those with Roe on their mind, shift that trend?

Taylor Swift is a very outspoken Democrat and her fans know it. Pretty safe to say that most of her fans lean that way as well. They may or may not actually show up on election day.

A broken clock is right twice a day. She’s still a capitalist multi-millionaire and complicit in the corrupt music industry and has defended TicketMaster/LiveNation for their monopoly of live music. Like everything she does, it’s all performative.

I don’t give a fuck that she’s a multi millionaire. You know why? Let’s look at some math:

          • 25,000 seconds = ~7 hours
          • 40,000 seconds = 11 hours
          • 75,000 seconds = ~21 hours
          • 100,000 seconds = ~1.2 days
          • 250,000 seconds = ~2.9 days
          • 500,000 seconds = ~5.8 days
          • 1,000,000 seconds = ~11.6 days
          • 5,000,000 seconds = 57.9 days
          • 10,000,000 seconds = 115.7 days
          • 100,000,000 seconds = 3.2 years
          • 1,000,000,000 seconds = 31.7 YEARS

Why the hell should I be upset at her advocating for people to go register to vote? Is 10M-100M too much wealth? Yeah, but I’m far more concerned about the people making billions by sitting on their asses than I am about someone making millions by being an immensely popular song writer and singer (whose music is awesome).

This is like yelling at a retail worker for their return policy instead of yelling at the executives, who the worker is actively agreeing fucking suck. You’re falling for a talking point that the billionaires love to use to spread division. Like it or not, Taylor Swift not only works for her money, but she’s also been fucked over by billionaires in recording studios. She is closer to working class than she is to the filthy rich.
