“Also, if we steal it to train an LLM, that’s totally legal and we dont have to pay you”
That’s because a giant corporation is doing the stealing. When it came to the film studios, they gladly pirated each others material.
I stand by the observation that Intellectual Property is a temporary licensing monopoly that is granted as an incentive to create in order to facilitate a robust public domain. Once Disney et. al. lobbied government to extend copyright protection to outrageous, unreasonable lengths, the point of IP was lost.¹ IP is now a rent-seeking scheme (a wrongdoing even in capitalism) and is therefore not legitimate to a liberal, public-serving society.
Of course, since I’ve made that observation, my society shed all pretenses of being liberal or public-serving.
¹ A robust public domain is also sabotaged by publishing company efforts to bury games they’ve abandoned or have ceased to support, sometimes suing users who resurrect those games with private servers or emulation. Then there are efforts to evergreen patents and remaster music.

When Windows XP required activation by phoning home to Microsoft, we said it was going to end badly. (In fact, we were so sure that software engineers regularly kept Windows Loader, which bypassed activation, up to date, and followed up with windows 7 and 8)
I made the mistake of starting an account with the Stardock digital distribution platform, and buying some games on it. Once I had a sizeable library, Stardock sold the service to Gamestop, who failed to maintain it and closed it, and I lost the whole library.
To this day, I resent both companies for that.
“Also we can brick your car with a software update. So uh…”
Everything is becoming rent now seems capitalism is currently set on eliminating personal ownership for the proletariat.
That old capitalist chestnut “property is theft” /s
Paying company to download digital bytes - not owning, not stealing.
Downloading same digital bytes for free - not owning, but stealing?
🤔??wtf???
The rules are made up to best funnel all of the money into the maws of the Epstein class. Anything that prevents that is a crime.
Makes me proud to have 100’s of terabytes of seeded copywrited material. Hope to get that up to petabytes soon
Doing a real service to the community
I wish my torrent client showed the combined total but with the amount that are left seeding I’m sure it’s hella high but not quite to petabyes yet, dozens and dozen of terabytes for sure.

Companies have always done everything they can to take as much as we’ll let them and give as little as we’ll let them. Then they realized that they can just put out “educational” videos that specifically train us to let them take as much as they want and give as little as possible.
They were doing it in the 00s too…
You wouldn’t equip your death gliders with a recall device!
