A new, young PC technician was hired and from the get go he was practically blowing himself with claims he’ll be promoted quickly, he could do the job of 2 people, nobody works harder than him. Less than 2 months into the job someone calls the dept asking where he is because he was supposed to swap out a PC for a director at an off-site location. His manager called his cell and asked where he was. He told em he was just finishing up Cathy’s PC and he’ll be back on site.
Manager: “Cathy just called me asking why you haven’t shown up yet. So I’ll ask again…where the hell are you?”
Turns out he was hung-the-fuck-over and napping at home. He got canned very quickly.

Oh absolutely 110%. I could count on all my and your fingers and toes the number of coworkers I’ve had who spent half the day walking around chitchatting that they were the hardest worker, first in last out…they undeniably never were.
What’s worse than both is “I’ve been doing this for X amount of years!” Because then they’re both dumb and incompetent. If they say they have 20 years of experience usually it means 20X1st year of experience.
No later than 2 weeks ago a new marketing guy thought the best thing once he got his laptop was to start a thread of memes on Teams with everybody. People were already leaving left and right when I started paying attention to it. Unfortunately for him, when he sent an animation of a cartoon character doing a nazi salute I called him out on it saying that’s not ok, the HR manager was still in the thread. Dude lasted half a day on this job.
Reminds me of that cop guy who got suspended because he shared that anime girl “Aww shit N” meme.

Absolutely! Everyone wants to knock on small office jobs. The Office TV show is was a great example. Half the time it’s people doing enough to keep the company running. The other half was dumb shit. Nobody was tracking your piss times or micromanaging how many M&Ms you ate.
But I absolutely had my ass micromanaged when I was working in a warehouse or a restaurant.

Back then yeah. I also had to ask for time off and often got denied.
I once got denied for time off to help a family member who was in the hospital who I was going to drive home.
I told them I’m not abandoning family and took off any way and got fired.
This was after I gave a months notice and marked my schedule unavailable.
I’ve also got fired for a similar situation but for a college final that I literally could not reschedule or miss.
Now I’m highly qualified and at a much better job. And I still, decades later, have a ton of anxiety about asking for off. And theyre like “if you need off, take off, why are you so worried about it?”
For some people, it is in fact difficult to compute said action.
Prayers are a spiritual experience and practice, whereas the only thing you get out of smoking is a medical bill. They still want the latter because it’s a physical effect they can observe.
They can work you harder when you have lung cancer or long term illness from smoking and you need their medical insurance coverage.

I was training a new hire. She was good, better than me in some respects.
But one day she came in and did no work, just sat there shaking… insisting she was fine.
Turns out she was tweaking, she came in high.
She was given a final warning but then she came high again and was fired.
I worked in a restaurant where a server would shoot up in the bathroom before her shift. She didn’t last long.
That’s funny, considering how many people have told me that most of the people in food service are high due to how stressful it is. Maybe heroin isn’t the drug of choice, though.
In our case, lots and lots of alcohol. Definitely coke going around but it’s not my thing.
Weed. It’s easy to just hit a pen in the bathroom, and it relaxes you without making you literally incapable of doing the job. I’m sure other drugs are common in food service too, but the one I saw regularly was weed.

Negative minutes. Kid just out of college, the CMO (a monster of a human) had cosigned and bragged about how good this person was. They didn’t show up first day, hour past, someone called and HE was upset that a car hadn’t been sent to pick him up at home and he was waiting… Ridiculous in any scenario really, but this was in a car-brained major city where all people drove themselves, up to the CEO. Not common at all to have a car service. Was let go immediately in a probation period and CMO never mentioned it again.
I worked in phones a decade ago and a new hire that I thought was cool lasted a week. I got a callback from a foreign client that was just hung up on after being slurred and insulted for not speaking fluent English by the new guy. We had call recording. It was very awkward to have to tell my boss about it and unfuck the client relationship.
One factory job had a couple days of orientation in a classroom before we started on the floor, but on day one we ended with a tour of the work areas. As we went around, someone working recognized one of the others in my group as a local methhead/rampant thief. We found out that’s why he didn’t come back when we started working with the others.

I would have fired him as well. Even if I had to pay him out. If he refuses to shake hands with anyone that would be an entire different matter, but the don’t touch women rule some Muslims adhere to is rooted in sexism and misogyny.
It sounds like the court just didn’t like the reason given for the firing. I’m guessing if they talked to their corporate lawyer first, and fired him for workplace discrimination, that would have been an entirely different court discussion.
But firing him for performance after 3 days on the job? That’s an obvious lie.
You can’t have “my body my choice” for some things and not others. The law/principle is applied universely, everyone has a right to deny touch or any other action to any part of their body from any other individual/group.

Sure they have the right to choose who they shake hands with or not but an employer also has the right to fire that person over that choice if shaking hands is part of the job and work culture and they don’t want a misogynist working with their female employees.

You’re not a hypocrite. It seems like a different version of the paradox of tolerance. Think of it more like a social contract. They broke it first so you aren’t obligated to follow the rules when they don’t.
If a Muslim doesn’t want to shake hands with a woman then that’s fine but it also means you can’t work in jobs where you need to do that. Don’t push your beliefs on other people. Just because you believe something doesn’t mean the rest of the world needs to bend. We just need to respect your space to do it, or not do it.
If I couldn’t drink alcohol for religious reason, it wouldn’t be discrimination no one wanted to hire me as a wine sommelier.
If someone doesn’t want to shake hands fine but they should apply that rule to everyone equally regardless of race, gender and religion. Otherwise it’s discrimination no matter the reason, religion is no excuse to discriminate. Especially in a professional business environment.
Huh. While you can argue the morality of this one until the cows come home, most places in AU use a “trial period” under which either party can walk away for any reason.
Not sure if this counts, as it’s not quite getting fired, but a kid got dropped off for an interview, and as soon as he made it into the store lobby, the family member who drove him in did some donuts in the lot and peeled out.
His interview got cancelled because of that, and he just had to wait there to get picked up by someone else.
Wow what an asshole
I worked as a tester for an embedded system, and there was a whole team of us. Our work was handed out in these big 3cm thick packets of testing sheets, with tables and graphs and instructions on how to test the system to make sure the code was safe for production.
A coworker was evidently not wanting to do his work one day, and “finished” a packet the same day it was handed to him. Now a single page of those tests could easily take you a half hour, assuming the arcane instructions were even clear to you.
He “quit” before the next day.
Sorry, it wasn’t clear. Did he realize this was over his head and quit?
Or did he just power through the tests because the whole thing was a joke and quit?
Because I’ve had both experiences.
It was probably a mix or “I don’t get this” and “I don’t feel like it”.
Him “quitting” was because the other option was being fired and persecuted for falsifying safety documentation. He never actually did the tests, it was impossible to do so in less than a week, much less the day he claimed to do it in.

I’m not trying to defend Christian evangelism here because it’s annoying and harmful but I do have experience with Muslim friends attempting to convert me. More than a few actually. Certainly not as many or as often or as persistently as Christians and LDS and JWs but substantially more than never. I have no issues with most religion, but I do have a problem with evangelism. It’s just advertising by another name. Waiting for evangelismblock plus to go with my adblock plus.

In my story, he was not really fired. But a new hire in my company was handed his computer. Seeing it was on Windows, he asked to work on Linux instead. IT told him that Windows was mandatory so he resigned on the spot.

There’s a famous story at my job about this.
The hiring team kept saying they had trouble finding designers and developers because nobody wants to work on a Windows computer.
And the owner went. “So why are we forcing everyone to use windows?”
And then one department pointed fingers at another, to another, to another. Apparently a decade ago, some IT dude got Microsoft kickbacks and left the company. The next month, the whole “Microsoft” rule faded away and now my department is running Linux laptops, the designers and devs have their macs, and the accountants are using windows.
Yeah, the guy in my story was to be a developer as well. Clearly it’s way more confortable to work on Linux. The justification in my company is that the security protocols are already built for Windows so they don’t want to redo the job on Linux. Handling to OS’ would increase their work load.

Lol in my 20 years working in IT and IT security every desktop/laptop was windows except sometimes the people who needed to do graphics things (marketing) who were on MACs. Sure we had plenty of servers on linux, but standard for end points was always Windows. And every IT was sad that that’s the state of affairs but accepted it. I’ve hated Windows since 95 and been on Linux since one of the first Slackware versions (it was at a time when to have floppy disk support you had to recompile the kernel), but you have to adapt to your environment or else you refuse maybe 99% of the jobs out there.

I mean seriously what an idiotic thing to resign over. Almost every single court environment is Windows only. Most of them very rarely have Linux exceptions. Some of them might have an Apple exception but usually that’s only for executives. I mean unless he was a dab or something like that in which case it’s a little bit more acceptable. But not by much.
on one hand it’s easy enough to just run Linux on a VM if that’s what you want to use. On the other, I think an element some might forget is that most new hires were also applying for other jobs at the same time and often have other offers live on the table.

I started using my own laptop instead of my assigned one like a week after i started and no one cares. I RDP into my work laptop when I occasionally need windows software.
To be fair I am one of 8 people in our IT department so your mileage may vary with this tactic.

I don’t mind using a Mac at work. It’s just a BSD with a proprietary UI; it’s close enough if that’s the choice IT gives me.
I thought that’s how it would be too, but I’ve got to admit that the UI gets on my nerves much more than I expected.
Valid point, I feel the same. The whole concept of hiding UI elements for a better look, the weird upper bar and the shitty multimonitor support drive me insane.
It’s still miles better than Windows and a lot worse than Linux with KDE. But to be fair, there are paid apps for changing the UI quite a lot. There’s even one that gives you a Windows-like taskbar on a Mac.
Just think of it as OpenStep, minus the “open” part. 🤓
When I joined up at my current job, they asked whether I wanted a Linux or Mac laptop. I, of course, took the Linux laptop. The recruiter laughed and said “no one ever picks Mac.”
Now Macs are the only option because the IT department doesn’t want to run any tool other than JAMF.
What boggles my mind is one of the execs who was there long before I was. He selected a Mac, then used Parallels to run Windows on it.
I also use a mac at work after being offered a choice between that and Windows. I hate it. But the MacBook Pro they provide is objectively more powerful than the HP windows laptops they provide, so here I am.
I switched to Mac about 15 years ago because I started writing iOS apps and you can only do that on a Mac. As a lifelong Windows user I was initially pretty dubious, but I soon came around. Now I hate MacOS and Windows equally.

Why must i develop for Mac on a Mac?You can develop the app (as in write the code) on any platform but Apple made it so iOS apps can only be compiled from Apple devices. There’s no particular technical reason I’m aware of just they’ve designed their proprietary compiler that way and haven’t released it cross platform.
Windows and Apple both desire 100% control over their ecosystems l, including custom tooling and languages that may not exist elsewhere.
Reliance on other people’s stuffeans less reliance on the OS provider. Hence why they have competing, well everything.
That’s laughable. Windows does not demand 100% control over their system. Windows is a you think you can do it let’s see you go ahead and do it and fuck shit up. And when you do fuck it up you’ll have a much more difficult time fixing it. On Linux it’s a yeah go ahead fuck shit up Good luck here’s a log should be easy to fix it but you got to make it work in the first place. On a Mac it’s you’ll get it from this space install it in this way or you won’t use it at all.

I used to work in a large fishing ship as an engineer, there I became an atheist. Once there was a huge storm and we had to balance the ship to make sure it wouldnt roll, the guy who had to do it was praying and didnt have time to balance it, we almost died because he had mandatory pray time. From than we had a rule that there is no religion on the ship, once we come back to land than you can believe.
From what I hear of Islam on e.g. fasting it tends to be quite a practical religion. I’d not be surprised if that guy could in fact have not been praying at that moment and still stuck to all the teachings of his religion.

It is also considered a sin if you choose to fast under circumstances that put your health in danger.
Apparently (I’m not a scholar but was curious) in dire situations that require immediate action they could’ve prayed while helping out, even shortening it out as long as the short (verbal?) prayer is done in honesty and the situation absolutely demands it. Apparently it’s even outright disallowed to not safe yourself or others during life-and-death situations even if it prevents you from the mandatory prayer because preserving people’s lifes and your own tops those rules, at least that’s what I read so far. If that boat story is actually true that person probably was a dipshit who happened to break his own religion’s rules.
Also looked up fasting: There seems to be even more leeway on that. Just do it later if you can’t do it right now due to illness or similar, or pay “fidyah” (give poor people money for food). Though I’m kinda curious how it’s handled when someone is too old to fast but also poor as fuck, not a situation where you’d want to also feel guilty about this.
Young, expectant, illness, or age are all specifically exempt from fasting. At least that is how it works for the Baha’is, and they are to Islam as Christianity is to Judaism, so I assume they copied the rest of the fasting rules verbatim. I do know that the Muslims fast from sunup to sundown same as Baha’i

Sure. I’m skeptical that any of those disciplines except perhaps extremely minor, strict ones teach that you have to continue praying, in your knees, in an emergency.
From speaking with Muslims during Ramadan, if there’s a bona fide emergency that takes priority over prayer no questions asked. Anyone who says otherwise is an extremist or wrong.
